Making new flat platen - Harden?

i just build up a wall of extra JB weld under the lower lip of the glass for my platens i have a mill and to make sure i get nice bonds i miil out a bit of steel under where the glass will sit so i cn squeese to much of the JB weld out of the joint

How to put a shelf on a platen? Mill it? (I do now happen to have a mill :). )
All I did was cut a small piece of 1/8" thick angle iron (or did I bend a piece of flat stock?) into an L and drilled a hole in one leg, and used the same bolt that attached the platen to the backing plate to hold my "shelf"

My plan is to just drill and tap the bottom of the platen and a small piece of steel, thinner than the glass. I haven't done it yet, but I've seen others on here do it that way.
I'd get that done before ordering glass, so you know the exact length you'll need them to cut the glass
I do exactly that on all platen on my grinders. On last one i just drill holes and peened two pins ..... it works

I have a small lip/shelf welded to mine and then float the glass with JB Weld. Change the glass bout every six months or so.

I also just made a small shelf about 1/4x1/4x2" and welded it onto the base of the platen.
I used JB Weld to hold the glass in place. It's been there for 3 years so far.

I, too had only JBWeld holding my platen on for 5-6 years without incident. But it wasn't tough to add the extra assurance of the safety shelf.
I've only had to change it once, after I chipped and cracked it when accidentally slamming my work rest into it.

Exactly , easy to do so why not extra assurance. I use platen for fabricating many parts and most worn place on glass is down close to work rest . So when that part of glass is to much worn and because platen can be mounted in both way i just turn platen and use clean part of glass.........Which mean i have no support for glass from downside ...so far no problem ...but it is scary to even to think what would happen if glue fall.I use polyurethane seal for that , i think it is better then epoxy for this .Little mess to clean when times come to change glass, but ...you can t get everything :)
