Making sheaths

Dang Ray!! Isnt that blade too hot to hold bare handed? You are one tough dude!

Hey Bruce, One thing I have found out over the years is you really need to be tough to be old. I find holding onto hot steel keeps the senses in tip top shape. :D

What fire, Dave?

Ray both knives look great, but I really like that little blackwood guy. Both sheaths look nice too. Awesome work as usual!

Is it the blackwood you like or the overall look? I did that handle shape quite ofter 3 or 4 years ago and then just lost interest in it. Its starting to interest me again.

ray...i like the blackwood one too...to me the handle looks like an older style shape to me....that's what i like about it.....ryan

ryan, That older style shape is what I was trying to come up with when I first tried it. I've got a good sized blade that I plan to leave forged finished and I'm thinking a handle of this style would work real well for what I have in mind. I haven't heat treated the blade yet. I just hope I can get it good and straight because it really has been forged thin. I'll post pictures if I can get it to turn out.

Ray, I also like the shape of that handle (and blackwood seems to always turn out nice, one of my favorite handle materials.)

I'd love to see a trailing point on that handle style --- seems like it would have a persian / pirate look...

Have you ever done one like that?

The overall look of the knife is great. I like the longer guard with the extra groove work, the blackwood, the handle shape, the finish on the blade... the sheath looks perfect as well. Just overall a very well done, neat looking little knife. :D

Eli, As you know I'm in the middle of making sheaths but I did slip off the path again. I just finished heat treating these 3 blades and sent the photo off to a customer so he could pick the blade he likes the most. I figure one of the remaining blades would look good with the old style balled handle.

Can't wait to see what you come up with Ray. Got any more blackwood?

I keep reminding myself that Bladewest will be here before you know it...

Bladewest is several months away. OKCA and the Wolverine shows are almost upon us. I'm not sure about the blackwood. The customer chose the middle blade. I went and picked out a piece of stag for it and already had the handle on it after I took another look at the project. I saw right away I need a piece of stag with a curve so I'll have to take one step backwards. Been trying to do this knife from memory since our printer isn't working.

I would've bet money that he'd take the bottom blade... that bottom blade is freakin' awesome.

Cliff, I would have bet on the top blade since it has no temperline. He actually chose the first blade I made. I made the two other blades to give him a choice. Anyway the two left overs are mine to do as I please. Here's a couple shots of his knife. I've got a couple hours before I go to church so I should be able to make the wrought iron resemble fittings.

Here's a picture of the knife a couple hours later. Its just starting to talk.

Those fittings are looking good, but i'm surprised he doesn't want a more substantial guard?

That's some very nice stag!
