I have for awile wanted to make a small batch of steel. I do a lot of welding for my job at the machine shop. and was wondering if it was possible to make steel with a tig welder as that is my prefered welder. We have a very high powered multy welder that does allmost everything you could want. i was thinking of getting some iron powder and melting it with the tig and adding in other alloys to my likeing. then taking that small clump of steel and forge weld it to other clumps of steel to make a blade. i tought it would be a fun experament to try. what you think?

JT, Hopefully you got some sleep after a long day of eating and drinking, and this TURKEY of an idea has passed.

Simple answer to this question - NO. I know you are one of those who take NO as a challenge, but in this case the NO is really a NO.

It has passed :foot:. i was a little absent minded last night. now the other question is why does it not work?

I think keeping the carbon in when you have the melt going with the tig might be a problem. They do make melts of steel using a carbon arc type of heat source though. I would think the metals invilved in the alloy would stay close to original. But, how would you know what was happening with the carbon. Just my thoughts. Jim
