Making the move from Alox SAKs to traditionals

Swiss Traditional Alox Solo gets rotated with American Traditional CV Peanut;)

IMO the Alox Solo is by far the best, most rugged slipjoint I´ve ever encountered:thumbup: short of maybe a custom which I won´t probably ever own.:(

I usually carry a SAK Alox soldier that has been in my pocket for 5+ years, recently resharpend it and it is close to shaving hair of my arm now, pretty beaten up but a great little knife. I normally carry some other knife as well, it has been anything from a all black Manix 2, Douk - Douk, Opinels, Delica 4 ffg and now for the last few days some Rough Rider trapper or sowbelly stockman and today a German Eye Brand Sodbuster jr.

I like the traditionals, especially at work they are quite office friendly, can help with the small food prep of making my salad as side dish for lunch, cut up boxes and stuff. They do 99% of what a knife could be used for in an office quite well.

But I do like to have that small SAK with me, it does have the other tools as well, I love to have the awl, the can opener, the screwdrivers in my pocket at all times.

I think I'm going to bite the bullet and go for the chestnut bone cv swayback jack. After hearing so much about it in the forums, I think that I need to try it out and go from there!

well, so many great suggestions here. personally, i have found carrying a case med. cv stockman and a 2008 vic alox soldier for utilty works terrific!

best wishes,

brian

I would recomend the sway back jack, it probably the best made knife I own thats out of kershaws, benchmades, spydercos, and bucks. that cost the same or more.
I would also recomenda case trapper in cv, I have a large in cv and yellow derlin and it is one of my most used. cant beat it for easy food prep with its long thin blade. If thats to large then they do have the smaller version that has been mentioned above.

My EDC is a Vic Adventurer.
Single locking blade, long enough to go through a big apple.
Screwdriver, csn opener, phillips screwdriver (great for inside computer cases) and reamer (which I find good for cleaning fingernails).
It's a long knife but very slim and light since it only has five tools (well, seven if you count toothpick and tweezers).

I'm going against the grain (maybe). My first two Alox SAKs will be here this week. An electrician and a Pioneer. Who knows where this might lead...

The electrician is a nice knife. I'm a huge fan of the pioneer. Have an old school red alox with the original cross. Thing is beautiful. The blades may not patina, but watching the red alox slowly wear away over the years brings a smile

It`ll lead to a loooot more SAKs.

On topic I have been pondering on that subject for a long time. When I am not at work (2 or 3 times a week) I carry a slippie usually a SAK. I do own 2 or 3 traditional Cases and Opinels, but SAKs are just too damn useful not to have. Carrying a knife in public is a grey zone here, so I try to keep it to the bare minimum. Pocket space is also heaviely fought over.

I own about 15... okay let`s say 20 SAKs, and my first knife I got from my dad was a SAK, the Standart. For me the Spartan (Pinstripe green) or the Pioneer are the perfect edc knives. Too useful not to have. I love traditionals, for example my Case SS Cayenne bone Trapper. I love the feel, the bolsters, the 2 blades and the spayblade I rarely use. Unfortunately it is not as well build as the Saks I own. If you hold it to the light, you see gaps between the bone and the brass inlay and the blade when open isn`t entirely flush with the backspring.

That said I still love it for what it is. Almost every day I ask myself, why carry the Trapper when I can get a lot more tools in a smaller package? Need to open a bottle, open a can, use a screwdriver, need an awl, tweezers, toothpick, straight pin, corkscrew, small blade, big blade? All in a small package that looks good, non threatening, and is a classic? No problem, my Spartan saves the day.
Still the call to simplicity, a tool from days gone by, where men didn`t need more than a blade to do the chore is alouring.

For christmas I have ordered a CV SBJ and will combine it with a Leatherman Squirt as an experiment. I like smaller blades for edc, and the Trapper is a tad too big for my taste.

I could go on and on about this subject, but I`ll leave it at that.

For the record I currently have a Solo Alox in my pocket, but I don`t feel outgunned because I have a Vic Skipper in my rucksack and a Swisstol with wrench and bits in a Leatherman sheath, in my Jumbo Versipack I usually don`t carry every day. If it weren`t for that I`d carry my favourite Spartan or my Pioneer.

A quality slipjoint matches up well with a small keychain tool. Everyday, I carry my Case peanut and, on the key chain, either a Victorinox Rambler, Leatherman Micra or Screwpop.

I can't deal with keychain tools. I used to have a keychain loaded up with all sorts of lights and gadgets, but it was just too big and heavy. Now it's either a swisstool on my belt paired with a traditional, or a SAK on the days where I don't want the ST.

I go back and forth on knives all the time. For a long time I carried a Buck 301 Stockman, after a good year or so with a Super Tinker. Then I bought a Case Trapper in Chestnut Bone with CV blades; carried that for about three months solid. Today I came home from work and put the trapper in my nightstand; the Super Tinker is back in my pocket right now.
In January I'm back to university after a good seven years of working at a small publishing firm. I was heavily considering a Chestnut Bone Peanut as a smaller, friendlier carry, but found a good deal on a black Vic Executive and ordered it on a whim. I imagine I'll wind up with that in one pocket and the Trapper in another, and probably the Super Tinker in my bag. It's tough to decide, but fun to agonize over.

Don't mind me

Halfstops - check
disappears in pocket - check
Carbon steel - check

I do carry a yella trapper and or black alox pioneer for when a stouter blade may be necessary but it doesn't come out too often anymore.
