For general carry purposes in and around any major metropolitan area, blade length is a determining factor for legality, and that makes folders tops over fixed blades, since there are many more small-bladed folders. For heading out into the woods, fixed blades make sense, but I don't think people leave their folders behind. They just carry more knives. If fixed blades are becoming more popular, then IMHO it is because more folks are heading into places they can carry them. On the whole we are fortunate to be able to still carry any type of knife. I lived in England where even folders are illegal unless you are a tradesman with a legit need (linoleum cutters, horse knife, etc). While living there, I found a Leatherman to pass muster and have come to see why it is so popular, aside from having a variety of implements, it is very non-threatening. Put a fixed blade down your waistband hidden from view and in many localities you are asking for trouble.
