Making you cringe !

Every blade I have worked on has been "baptised in blood" at some point during the shaping or finishing process. While the process of bleeding on a blade doesn't really bother me, what does make me cringe is seeing pictures of the sort of mishaps that have occurred to others on this board. For some reason it is harder for me to look at injuries other people have than it is to cope with my own. I've never been good looking at other people's pain.

Fitting a Guard! Man, it's time consuming, boring, and hard on the hands, not to mention it's a p@***@@ if it doesn't fit right and you have to start over.

That makes me cringe.

Long as I'm on a roll...

Choils... WHY? Why would anyone want a big divot out of the strongest part of their bladel? I know, "you can choke up on the blade" is the standard answer, but I'm not buying it. Maybe the blade is too long for the work you're doing, if you have to have a dull spot to wrap your finger around.

Standard answer; I never give that one; the choil, being where it is, can be many things: the place to transition into the handle and guard, its the place where you remove stock to lighten the knife so as not to be heavy in the hand.
Distal taper, of a blade, starts at the front of the ricasso/choil area then narrows to the tip, and from the shoulders to the tip of the tang.

Without a choil, the guard width is fixed.

A knife is built from the ricasso out; ditto the choil. A knife without a choil tends to be harder to sharpen. If a blade should break through the choil, it had nothing to do with the choil and everything to do with the heat treat.

Hears one vote for choils. :D and one vote against.:D

Then I have a picture of a lathe accident you don't want to see. Makes me ill and I have a strong stomach. (There are these little bubbles, and I think one of the bubbles is an eyeball)

I showed it to an apprentice. You know, to shock him into to thinking about safety (and to mess with his head a little) and the sick SOB thought it was great. He set it as the desktop on a drip feed computer. lord...

Something that makes me cringe is taking the time to carefully grind a blade down to a perfect, even, very fine edge. And then, at the end - botch the damn tip. feh

A knife feature that I don't like is (ya'll gonna think I'm nuts) lanyards. I don't like lanyards on knives.

Hollow grinds on a knife that is flat up to the hollow grind. Talk about a lazy way to make money, at least have some class and distal taper it!
