Making your own grinding belts?

Kind of a wierd one here! I have access to a hundred feet or so of loose 2" wide 80 grit belts. In other words a big roll 2" wide! I also have access to some other odd size belts that would like to make into 1x42 belts for my poor wimpy little belt grinder (sure beats hand filing/sanding!) and I need to know if it is feasible to make my own belts to size? Thanks!

I was given 74 130" 60grit belts and I figured I would just start emailing belt company's and get some of the tape and glue and shorten them to 72", as it turns out there is a bit more to it then that, the glue is frozen in dry ice until it is ready to use and it takes a 50 ton heated press to apply the tape and glue

I have managed to crack the substrate and grit off the ends of the belts and super glue them together, even then there is a small bump at the joint,

it really isn't worth the trouble

I would think it is not feasible to make your own belts and would be concerned from a safety perspective about them failing. However what you could do is make some sanding wheels or drums from two inch thick material and glue the paper to the circumference grit side out. Then mount the wheels to a motor arbor to make a grinder.

Yes, use it for hand sanding applications. Bad enough to get a factory belt with a bump every once in a while!

Thanks for all the great ideas! Free grinding material is always nice to get! Finding effective uses for it can be a tricky! But not on this forum!
