This might be the most beautiful knife I've ever owned.
Somewhere in Croatia some of the most breath taking puukos are being constructed with great materials and attention to detail.

Danjiel is sells his work here on bladeforums. His knives sell in mintues so I found him on Facebook and request my dream Puuko
A stacked Birch 90mm with rhomboid geometry. 2 monthes and $190 shipped.

The steel is 52100 stock removed with a double temper cycle.

Danjiel, Thank much friend,

This has been my sharpest knife out of the box.

I'll make a review later.

This guys work is amazing.

Ok,ok Pekka is still the reigning Puuko master however with a 1 year wait list and a $360 shipped price means there tough to come by.

Careful Thomas, the qualities so nice you might end up with more than one. ;)

They come in an amazing assortment of handles materials too. (Burls, stablized, Micartas)

He also offers 3 steel varieties

Forged San Mai with an 80crv2 core (silver steel) clad in iron
Regular Silver steel (80crv2)
And 52100

He makes knives just as good as the Finnish makers, plus the price is reasonable. The latter is what makes them sell so fast.

That's a fantastic looking knife and 52100, when done right, performs with the best of them. I'm definitely adding his work to my wish list.

I have eyed his work more than once.

Does anyone have any info on his steel? Is it forged, stock that he buys from someone and he just grinds it down, or something else (a little slow this morning) Also, any info on his heat treat and how it is processed?

Thanks

52100 flat bar, stock removal
"Hardness is 59-60, heat treated with three normalizing and two tempering cycles for fine grain."

Whatever that translates to, in practice the steel, geometry, and heat treatment work great in use.

I always click his sale threads just to feast my eyes.
If I ever decide I want a puuko, it will be a Malanika.

Just for the record, 80CrV2 is not silversteel. It's a steel especially developped for wood working tools and in my experience can hold an edge like 52100 while being tough as 5160, to put it down real simple.

Silversteel is Böhler K510 and has a quite different composition. It holds an edge even longer, but needs to be treated very carefully to avoid brittleness, not surpisingly, having 1,2% C inside.

I have a constructive critique on this package. While the puukko seems flawless from the pics I can see that he still needs to put a little work into the sheath, especially in the mouth area. To make them better he needs either to fold the leather inside or do a small cut all along the mouth inside that will help wrapping even tighter the handle after wetforming.

Even Kallioniemi failed to craft flawless sheaths: he was particularly unhappy about the bulkyness of the stitchings.

Great post Fredrick

It's good to have an eye for details.

As for the steel,

I was under the impression that DIN 80crv2 was also a silver steel just a lower carbon content of DIN 115crv3 which is the same composition as Boher K510

From my research the definition of silver steel doesn't seem to have one specific steel but is a class of tool steels made in Germany for straight razors by DIN or Bohler with various amounts of carbon and vanadium.

Thoughts?

It's true that silversteel doesn't have a one and only composition, even O1, among others, has been ocassionaly labelled as silversteel. Anyway, the "true" one used in razors and puukkos has at least 1% C and comes in mirror polished round bars, hence the name.
Currently the two silversteels used for puukko forging are either Böhler K510 or Krupp 115CrV3.

I do no own one of his puukos, but just looking at the pics suggest the cutting performance is out of this world!

The performance on this blade would make Mors Kochanski blush

Cutting a wrist thick green Hawthorne shoot.
I flexed the tree and applied pressure with the razor sharp edge.
I didn't expect it to perform this good.

It carves beatiful feathers from this piece of dead pine.

I had a blast this weekend using it.

Didn't take pictures of all the fun.

Looks like the performance match's the beauty.

I bought one for a friend and got to handle it after it arrived. I was very impressed. I put it up there with the best in the world. As good as Pekka any day.

Zieg

Yea man the heat treatment is immaculate, very fine grain combined with that rhomboid geometry set at the perfect angles for sharpness and durability.

Just wow.

I'm pretty OCD and I'm used to sharpening my knives out of the box.
Not this knife, haha Daniel puts mean edge on there with his king stones.

I'm going to have to take this knife on my winter snow shoe camping trip
