Mammoth Ivory

When the scales are cut they are not sold by weight. The best colored ivory I now get comes from Eskimos along the coast that will be soon collecting it from the mud banks along the rivers and coast. Green is probably more rare than blue but what I like most is color with interesting patterns. The blue color is from vivianite, an uncommon iron phosphate mineral that gives a rare indigo color to fossil ivory and bones.

I have to agree about the textures and patters being some of the best part of ivory, and having the colors accent them. The green color come from gold, right? And if vivianite makes blue, and black is from exposure to the elements. What am I missing that makes colors?

Thanks Chuck, I'll let you know next time I come up. I was just up at the begining of April, my little sister just got married. BUt I'll shoot you a email next time I'm around.
