These scales are cut from a mammoth "spit" tooth. Mammoths went through 5 or 6 sets of teeth in their life time. The teeth would form from the back of the jaw rather than underneath. Then, as a tooth wore out, it continued to move toward the front of the jaw like a conveyor belt, finally being spit out the front of the jaw as a new tooth took its place.
This tooth has fascinating patterns and colors. Trimmed up they measure 4 1/2 x 1 1/2 x 3/8. I am asking $90 for this set. Shipping will be $5 SOLD !

Now i will be the first to admit 2 things. 1st, i don't know very much about mammoth tooth. and 2nd it has been my dream to work with it every since i saw a knife with some tooth scales. o man it makes my mouth water. so my question is this. what is the difference between this set and the ones on eBay that sell for like 20 bucks. It seams like allot of the eBay ones are dyed. is that because there trying to hide bad or not undesirable coloring. just trying to get an idea of the grades of tooth as I'm wanting to start working with it. Thanks

The cheap tooth scales on eBay are small. They also have no grain structure to hold them together. Only one set of scales or stick tang handle can can be cut from a tooth like this.I just shipped off a 12 pound tooth to Charles Turnage that will probably yield over 30 sets. You will never see two of these sets feom tooth root that are alike.

Hey Chuck, hows life back in the big AK? JT, chuck is a good guy and has been in the ivory business for some time. We were just talking ivory before I left. If you want mammoth ivory or teeth, Fairbanks is the place to turn for good prices and the best selection. If you want to start working with this mat, Chuck is the guy to know.
