Man (and 8 crew) vs wild: behind the scenes

Bear Grylls --- He will get people killed--

And bunnies. He faked killing a wild rabbit and had a tame one brought in and slaughtered for him. I think he did this more than once... there's one with a bad stick throw, and another where he failed (or was too impatient) to snare a rabbit and they brought one in for him.
Or the "wild" horses he found... with horseshoes on.
Or the "lava field" he was on and jumped over a dangerous chasm... that turns out to be 50yards from a parking lot for tourist walks.
Its all on youtube for you disbelievers.

I can't abide a man that'll kill a tame bunny for ratings.
He's like the worst Elmer Fudd ever.
At least Elmer TRIED.

His wackiness is entertaining for a little while, but I never learn anything from his show.
I rarely learn anything new from Les Stroud either, actually, but I just enjoy his humbleness much more. Bear makes everything EXTREME!!!! and it leaves a bad taste in my mouth, like nature is another thing to be conquered. Two very different philosophies, and I know which one I will hang my hat on.

It appears he runs his safety rope down his sleeve so it is out of sight. I noticed it in a recent episode and you can see it in this video as well. I suppose it makes it more believeable that he is actually climbing down things with just vines.

but his version of touching on survival is a bit more energetic and youthful, so he is raking in the younger audience it seems. ....
Yes, if you are totally ignorant of even basic woodsmanship or survival skills, I guess you might find Eddie Grylls interesting.

Grylls shows viewers some of the often wild and very entertaining things people can do to survive out in hostile elements, like a teacher basically.
Really? Please give some examples.

He's an example of the blind leading the blind.

I think you could lump 90% of his viewers into the "totally ignorant of even basic woodsmanship or survival skills" category...

My name is SouthernCross and I have a confession to make

I find Bear interesting (i.e. I like to watch his show).

I guess my secret is now out. I am totally ignorant of even basic woodsmanship (although over here we prefer to call it bushmanship :D)

Just as well I never venture off the footpath (I believe you guys call it the sidewalk).

God only knows what would happen to a complete novice like me if I ever ventured into the wild :D

BTW, I used to like watching the three Stooges as well. Somehow I managed to not poke people in the eye or run a saw across their head either.

Kind regards
Mick

I consider it rather like a Sunday magazine show that was running here called Countryfile in that -

a] those want to try to identify with the countryside / farming / field sports like to dress up in their waxed cotton, woolly jumpers and Hunters wellies and tune in with the belief they are tapping in to genuine country life

b] surveys showed that few if any real farmers were lounging about on a Sunday watching that shit

c] sometimes I would flick it on just for the weather forecast

Who didn't get what they paid for?

Bear Grylls --- He will get people killed--

That's like saying NCIS will teach you to solve crimes! It's a freaking show people! How many people watch his show and then just head out to the middle of nowhere, jump out of a plane and try to survive?!? It's a show for folks who love the outdoors and adventure; nothing more!!

I
Grylls never said he was one man out against the elements...

Well in the beginning he did.

it doesn't sell, period.

Survivorman did sell, it was just too strenuous for Les.

NCIS doesn't say that they'll teach you to solve crimes. Bear says at the beginning of each episode that he'll teach you what you need to know to survive.

Ha!

I'm older but young at heart I guess.

I think Bear Grylls is an amazing athlete and I love to watch his program. He's like Spiderman for God Sakes. I also believe that he takes some stupid risks and is going to end up like the Crocodile Hunter Guy...Dead.

The other guy, Mears is more like a teacher and one can learn from him a more practical approach to bushcraft. He will never be as popular because he does not have Bears' personality.

I love his show and I thought last night's show was really cool. I think some of you guys think you're way more "survivor guys" than you really are. Just because someone enjoys the outdoors, has some backwoods knowledge, has a few neat ways to make fire, etc (and I am one of those guys), doesn't mean we shouldn't like a TV show or neat person. If someone is dumb enough to get killed because they end up in the crazy outlandish situation, that's on them, not on a TV show. For hells sake, if I ever end up in outerspace I won't be looking for a light saber! It's an outdoor adventure show and it's entertaining. It makes people want to enjoy the outdoors, spend their time and money on gear and experiences and live life. If they're too old to get out and have an adventure, it lets them have a great time through the show. If it encourages folks to get out of their house and live a little, more power to Bear. If it makes people find sites like this, research bushcraft, adventure or survival, then it's a win win for all. Too many folks come to sites like this and think they have some elite knowledge that can only be spoken in tongues. Give me a break. Too many mall ninjas is what I've found on many, mamy websites. I don't know many outdoor adventure loving folks that wouldn't trade places with Bear any given day! It's a show folks, and an entertaining one at that!

Also, I am soooo tired of hearing folks here quote "he will teach you to survive", "he says that" blah blah freakin blah!!!

Every single episode he does teach some kind of technique, skill or food source that could help someone survive in a given situation. So that is a statement of fact. If you do not take away some piece of knowledge watching his show than you are either a know-it-all, arrogant, or you never watch the show!

No need to yell at me. If you are unversed in the outdoors do you know that fatwood collection is the "skill" he's teaching that episode or do you think it's jumping from a waterfall into a river, or using a vine to scale a cliff.

Yes how dare I use the words of his show against him. Just because it's said doesn't mean anything does it.

Chad

Not yelling at you. Just yelling at the fact that some people think that just because they even know what fatwood is, they must be more well versed in in all aspects of his show. His "skill" in any given episode may be all those things, or none. But if one person learns something that helps them at some point in time, then his show becomes more than entertainment.

We don't blame the COPS tv show when every person gets arrested for being a scumbag. We can't blame Bear for someone getting lost in the woods or falling down a ravine.

:D

Ive only seen the show once.... it was very entertaining.

I cant remember where he was or anything, but he did find a pile of bear shit and eat it. He may have also encountered a river, and built himself a raft to float across it.

It was like watching some alternate reality drunk assed survivorman.

I guess my head is going to explode because I like both, Bear and Stroud. That being said, I'm not planning on sticking anything up my ass anytime soon, nor am I planning on carry a guitar with me when I go hiking. I think both guys are great at what they do, and wouldn't kick neither one out of my camp if they were there. Sure, it's either interesting or somewhat tame, depending on which one you are watching but if you really want to learn how to survive, shouldn't you not focus on some TV show?
