Man Survives 300 days with knife, pig

Well I'm certain I wouldn't take pink pants, not that there's anything wrong with that....

SAS recommends parang/machete for tropical rain forest survival. SAK is a no brainer for this kind of situation.

Wow, 300 days  Not to stray off topic, but 300 days all ALONE, I would have taken the GF if I were in his shoes :D

I would have taken a machete and the One Hand Trekker

Why is the fact that he has a knife important to the story? Sorta like saying "man saves baby from fire, owns gun"

I might like an axe instead of a machete

I used Google Earth to look at the island (Tofua). A whole lotta nothin.

I just looked with Google's satellite view myself... and I suppose one could call significant patches of logging and what looks like some follow-up agriculture 'nothin' but it seems a bit of a stretch to me. The zoom level isn't quite what Google offers for some more habitated islands, but I found at least 3 and perhaps 5 rectilinear structures around the perimeter, each nestled in logged areas. So cabins, storage huts? Perhaps some shelter, reading material, tools, even food? I'm not quite buying this story. While he may not have run into any other humans during the 10 months, chances are if he wandered around the island at all he did find human artifacts, and that sort of diminishes the 'nothing but two knives and a pig' thing a little.

Still, it'd be a fun exercise. Maybe even dangerous. Being vegetarian myself, the challenge to keep nutrition up to safe levels might prove more difficult than for a guy who eats pigs and fish. Unless there were some tasty roots and nuts... which I'm bettin' there are there in plenty.

I think I would take a machete and a SAK too. From some documentaries about tribes living in the rain forests of Sumatra and Borneo, I learned that those people use a machete to build houses of bambu, make weapons, prepare food, etc. Add a SAK to it and I think you're well equipped.

I must admit that I would make use of a SAK as well, as I do not think that prying deep splinters out with a machete would be as much fun as using the sharp awl on a SAK.

The pink pants are not the problem, I would like to get hold of whatever he is using to stop his beard growing (ten months of beard growth..my arse it is)....and if I could just find a way to market the ever-lasting cam-corder battery he used....I would make a fortune !

It said he had a solar panel to recharge the batteries.

I wonder if there is more he had on him: a gallon of water to get him started? neosporin to prevent infections? string? he obviously had clothes and a backpack, which I suppose was filled with more than just rocks, twigs, twine, dead pigs, etc. did he have a flashlight with rechargeable batteries?
