"man survives cougar attack by killing it"

Pocket Knives don't have to be clearly visible, after all, they're Pocket Knives, so putting them in the pocket is perfectly legal.

Just goes to show: When it comes down to the wire, the best knife for the job is one one you will carry every day.

Congratulations to the man for controlling his fear and doing what he had to.

My condolences to the cougar and its bereaved.

Does this mean if I have a bowie I could survive a bear attack?:D

Here goes:

Spyderco Salsa: Schizophrenic gopher
Mini-buck: Rabid Bunny
Old Timer lockback: Cougar with a taste for human flesh
Buck Vanguard: Very horny deer with attitude
Buck 119: Drug-crazed PCP-riddled Moose
Cold Steel Trail Master: Black bear after discovering stolen porridge.
Ontario Wakizashi: Enraged grizzly after getting fish stolen and kicked in the coconuts
Ontario Katana: Sugar-loaded Coke-drinking Polar Bear that didn't make director's cut

Did I leave anything out?

Actually, I'd worry more about the Moose. A Two Handed Greatsword would be advisable against a normal Moose and a PCP-Wired Moose would need a chainsaw.

migo: no offence, but you probably didn't even ask a cop about it.
It is illegal to keep any weapon in a place concealed from plain view.
I think you can actually punished by imprisonment for no more than 10 years.
Go ask your local police station about it. (and make sure you don't keep any on you at the time, they'll test your knife too)
Any knife that could be opened centrifugally or by gravity or by a push of a button or lever or switch is considered illegal at the first place, and then if you keep a knife in your pocket instead of clipping it to your pocket, it's also illegal and they could seize and prosecute you for it.

as long as it's used as a 'tool' you can keep a pocketknife concealed. you're not allowed to keep a 'weapon' concealed but a knife isn't necessarily a weapon.

Well migo, I'm not taking my chances with the cops... I know they usually let SAKs and Multitools (with blades) go by in the pocket, but I won't do that with my folders.

well, it's easeir to have a valid reason for carrying a folder if you're in a rural area than it is in an urban area.
