Man, that was just DUMB

My only suggestion is to stay away from the old style Gerber multitools, the ones with the one hand opening. The pliers on those things are a major hand pinchers if you are cutting wire!

I think the Wave is way too big, with too many tools hard to get at.

The Swisstool Spirit is easier for him to hold and all the tools are on the outside except for the pliers themselves. They all lock (with an easy unlock). Even the crazy knife blade might be good for him -- a big spatula sheepsfoot with serrations, like a lightduty saw, to back up the regular saw when that's more aggressive than he needs.

The XE6 looks like a better size choice for him and it has all the tools but many of them are really hard to get out and some are hidden behind others.

I'll also recommend the LM Juice:

- compact size for small hands, but still fairly robust
- all the tools he might need
- most tools open from the outside without unfolding the pliers
- rather good quality; should last a long time if it doesn't get lost.

Cabela's mini tool-pliers, straight blade, saw, two screw driver blades,-no scissors but a small led light. 10 bucks-I have seen these 2 for 10 at Christmas time. Small comes in belt case.

I'm going to go play with a spirit, for myself :D About the only thing i actuallyuse my crunch for at this point is when i need a second screwdriver and the vise grips.

He's got a good kit- he has a little shoulder strap canteen, his belt and neck knives, an frs-150 solar/dynamo am/fm/wx radio with flashlight, and whatever multitool he ends up with. I'll probably be passing one or two on to others this christmas season.

He's not lost any of it, either!!!

But the other thing I think I want to get him this season is a shoulder bag. His first aid kit, whistle, orange bandana and space blanket still live in a thomas the train engine backpack, but he's not into carrying it as much. he wants a satchel "like Da has".

So now I need to find one of those that's not too big.

Child is better prepared than most peope I know. And uses it all.

Another recommendation for the Juice - small package but still has quality tools. The needle nose pliers on the juice are nicer at precise things than the wave. For EDC, the juice is much nicer to carry than the wave - albeit the wave handles the bigger jobs better. If size for comfort is the issue - go with the juice. Also considerably cheaper than the wave.

The one thing I would do that would be easy mod would be to cut the corkscrew off. Damn if thats the only annoying thing with the juice. Mind you corskcrew's are nice to have be eventually they always start to swing a little loose and inevitably stab you in the palm.

That's cool that your getting your son into all the same stuff we are. Anyways, I got a pretty cheap multitool when I was 7 or 8 and I was the same way, always took it when I was building forts or whittling out sticks (which was very often). Anyways, my little sister is going to be 7 and I was going to get her a my "first sak" but now I am leaning to a plier type multitool. I figure she will like the extra tools, and I can just get her a better sak when she gets a little older. :)

i think there's a version of the my first SAK with a saw, as well. But by 7, I'd almost go for a compact, the pen and scissors are a big deal for kids (and adults)

Thing is, I'm really partial to the sak/multitool combo.

(Christof, you got another PM from me.)

A good small personal SAK is a great piece of gear. Once I got hooked on multitools, I stopped carrying a SAK everywhere, but those days are over. A good SAK is almost always with me (well, my Classic always is) and the multitools just come along when I know I'll need them.

I like a SAK like the Vic Ranger because it's got fullsize file and saw, and scissors too. I just got a Wenger Evo 18 (?) in yellow and black. Very compact, scissors, saw and a nail cleaner/file.

neato, I personally too find a leatherman wave indispensable for work and play. BUT, my personal preference is the original leatherman wave (much better screwdrivers, especially the philips, and scissors), not the current version of it. Hard to find retail but I've purchased two new in box ones off of ebay this year. I lost my first one from when they first came out, hated the new ones, bought two as a replacement! (just in case I lost another one)

i like my leatherman blast, i got it for about $30, and i think that is considerably less than the wave. works great for me, although the knife on it never really sees much use.

I have a like new Leatherman, the original leatherman tool. I would give it to ya for the little guy if you'd like. Just consider it payment for bringing him up the way ya have. Glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks they should learn about tools and knives and such early . Just shoot me an email if you'd like it. I might even have a small bag or pouch he could make his own PSK with, if he doesn't already have one.

I still go for my outrider for an EDC SAK. But my wife's Compact model is really making me want for urban carry. It's an amazing balance for such a thin vic.

He's got a Wave on the way, but I will email you about something else.

He doesn't really have a small tin-type PSK but has a pocket tackle box with his first aid and picnic stuff. Bandaids, triple antibiotic, gauze and t ape, honey, salt, sugar, pepper, and hot cocoa. Not quite a "real" PSK, but it works well because I like the "use your kit every day" mentality is fosters

I'll be on the lookout for your email. I agree with the idea of an EDC bag over a psk. I carry one too. Always with me, even at work.

Lol thats funny cause for me the fact the XE6 has a corkscrew was a big positive selling point!
:D
I generally prefer SAK's with corkscrews as well.
I'm not a wino i just like 'em thats all, lol.

I find corkscrews to be useful, and carry a SAK micro-screwdriver in my XE6 corkscrew.

Isn't there already a Juice without the corkscrew?
