Man, this thing can kill somebody. New Kukhri pix

I sharpen a lot and had wondered previously, with all that sharpening, my blades going to dissappear soon. I agree with the idea that the steel is not lost on a dull knife, just deformed, and that with repeated sharpenings, the blade will erode away. As I've seen in the past with my culinary knives. I would essentially scrape the metal away and through the years reprofile the blade without wanting to do so. I'd start with a kitchen blade with good rocker, then end up having a blade with a flat line, unable to cleanly seperate carrots, celery, etc.

I'll try burnishing more.

Sarge, how are you shaping the cool handles on the burnishers?

Also, that's the best link I've seen about steeling/burnishing. It would look good on the 'Tips, Tricks...' thread.

Aardvark I agree on both counts and will add the link and part of the info to the Tips thread.

Many thanks Sarge!!!! :D I just found out I've been using my smooth steels wrong all this time. :( Running the edge down like on a grooved steel works but I'm wondering now if the correct way won't be more efficient. ;) :D

I'll have you know I use only the most high tech equipment for work like that. Pair of rusty old needle nose pliers and an el-cheapo propane torch from Tractor Supply. Here's the deal, if you'll notice, the "handles" are skinnier than the rest of the file, 'cause I tapered them down that way on my grinder. Then it's a simple matter of wrapping the file in a wet rag, leaving the handle part exposed, and using the torch to quickly bring the thin metal up to red hot. At red hot, you can bend the metal with the needle nose pliers with very little effort involved. If the steel cools while you're working it, just reheat and bend some more. Once you've got it like you want it, quench it down cool, and go have yourself a beer. ;)

Oh, I remember you, all right. I had a feeling it would be something like that. Thanks again. I'll try that.
