Man vs. Wild on Discovery- phony baloney?

Still, I suppose there is a certain Darwinian logic to that happenning........

dunno what ep that was, but if i (in the middle of nowhere and the sun burns) piss on my tshirt and then wear it on my head and over my face

i wondr what darwin wud say about that :D

So do people have a problem with that show because it's not always real? or because it's offering bad advise?

I think its because people who spend too much time on the computer (me included) will have a natural tendancy to complain about things they have no controll over! Sure many of the things he dose are impractical, but he still has an awsum job doing it, and probably gets paid well for it too. I know Id like to have a job like that (well maybee without the elephant poop)

I am a volunteer with a Search and Rescue unit here in the Pacific NW. Most of my co-workers know that I do SAR work and have asked me about MvW. I have to explain to them that they should watch it for the entertainment value but not try anything he does. I recommend they do there homework and find a reputable outfit with first class instructors to take classes through. I attend all the seminars and classes I can get to so I can continue to learn and sharpen my skills. Unfortunately one of the seminars a colleague and I attended turned out to be a bunch of BS and the instructor was a blowhard and full of himself. Luckily we knew he was full of it we notified the sponsors that they had a fraud working for them. Have not seen or heard of them using this guy since.

One of the things that he does in every episode I have seen is he is constantly on the move. When someone we are looking for is on the move it makes more work for us and reduces the chances that we are going to successfully locate the subject before they expire. There was a case of this here last winter. The only time that I agree with moving is to get to high ground in the Florida swamp.

Granted I have not seen all the episodes as I did not find them worth watching after seeing a few of them. I have never seen Survivorman so I can't throw in my 2 cents on him.

What I am not looking forward to is they day we rescue a critically injured subject who says I saw it on MvW and gave it a try. I hope that day never comes.

Found a pic of the ferocious lion to appear in an upcoming Man v. Wild.

Safe bet is that there'll be a few computer touch-ups.

Bear is a crack up. Sqeezing himself a drink out of a steaming pile of dookie was my favorite. He does MANY things that would get a non-athlete hurt in every episode. Being stranded is one thing. Being stranded and injured is far worse. I know in his "surviving" in the Sierra's episode, it was shot totally out of sequence. I know the terrain he was in and he was all over the place in terms of micro-climates, elevations and location in general. I also love watching him do his bow-drill made from less than optimal materials and creating a coal the size of a briquet LMAO. Total BS but fun to watch. It is closer to adventure racing than survival.

And Bear gives bad advise. If you are lost/stranded and ANYONE know's your travel plan (which someone should), stay put. If you need to move to get essential resources like water, then do that and leave marks along the way...then stay with your resources. Using a cold river to travel until you are near exhaustion or hyperthermia is generally a BAD practice as well. So is shooting rapids in said river holding onto a log. Bear does offer little helpful nuggets mixed in there but if you know enough to discern them from all the rest, then you don't need Bear's advise so much. It is just entertainment. I always look forward to the disgusting food item/Fear Factor dining moment in each episode.

I have a lot of respect for Les Stroud on the other hand. He makes mistakes but he and we learn from them. Dude knows way more than I do in general but he blows it on shelters it seems to me.

HALO (well, not technically HALO, but...) insertions into a survival situation a nice touch ;-). Ok...I will stop. I said it was entertaining...for better or worse.

Did you see the one where Dunner flogged a dead horse?! LOL...

One more thing about what I believe was that episode in the Sierras. He made a throwing stick and eventually developed enough skill to dispatch the first bunny he came across on the first throw. Well they really obscure the image when he stalks and makes this amazing shot. If I recall correctly the segment had almost a picture negative quality (maybe just over-exposed) to it which made it hard to see clearly and they put a slightly different kind of blurry spot over the bunny to "show the viewers". I am pretty certain the bunny he kills was pet store bought. It was probably the kind raised to feed to large pet snakes. As if any more needed to be written :o

hahah yeah, i remember that throw a stick at a bunny scene raised quite an eyebrow with me too!

ever chased rabits and etc. with a throwing knife?

lots of fun xD

why wont he wipe off his face??

he seemed to enjoy the elephant turd juice on his face, maybe it tasted sweet lol maybe we are all missing out on something??
