Does anybody know what kind of knife it is that Bear Grylls uses on his Man vs. Wild show? I know it must be a high quality steel, the way he continuously beats on it...To me, it looks like a custom Dozier; just curious on anybody else's opinion.

Apparently its one made especially for him, or just one he endorses. In earlier seasons he used a combo edge Gerber Gator.

That Bayley knife is the one he uses. And most often it's the partially serrated version. He probably gets a new one after each episode because the last time I watched the show he hammered on the spine with a big rock in order to baton the knife through a tree. Definitely not what I'd do with a ridiculously expensive knife.

In New Episodes o the Show It is this Bayley Knife made in Europe. It is Extremely Nice knife. reminds me of Dozier. One Of the Nicer things about it is the Leather sheath that can be Worn sideways or horizontal if needed or wanted. I have Never Seen a Knife come with a sheath so nice. Only special order custom sheaths are that nice.

Bad thing is 350 Euros = $445 American Dollars + shipping from Europe= $500. so it is completely outragous Price. you can have Custom Knife with any sheath you want for that, Or a Busse extreme hard use, or SR77 steel Scrapyard and any sheath you want for less. Extreme Rip off, or over priced in my opinion, when you can have nicer better designed Knives and custom sheath with even snake skin if you like for that much.

He Seemed to "Survive" his extreme adventures with a $30 Gerber gator in the first few seasons. Funny.

Bear Grylls is still recovering from some rather serious injuries he suffered in Antarctica last year. Les Stroud retired after the last season - he missed his family and the extended time in the boonies was taking it's toll on him.

While Grylls' Bayley knife now has partial serrations, the original variant didn't. The initial 350 pound price was less shipping & import duties. Initially, it would run ~$700 by the time an American got one. Now - Les Stroud has more meager tastes. He either has just a pocket tool, Leatherman or Gerber - I can't tell. When he carries a separate, it is usually a Buck 119 Special - a US-made fixed blade hunter-style you can pick up at Wally World for the princely sum of $34 + s/t.

Without the helicopter, Les Stroud fares better 'in the boonies'. Bear Grylls is entertaining... he was that kid everyone knew who would eat or drink anything on a dare. Les Stroud might drive me batty with his harmonica, of course... just kidding. I'd love to meet either one of them.

Also, I Like Les Shroud Better. More REAL Information. and Less tools. Just a Multi tool and Harmonica. Seems More "real" To me then Bear Grylls and an entire camera crew filming him jumping out of helicopter. Yes Might be entertaining. But Les Actually gives Real Information. We all Know we can eat rotten goat eye balls if we are starved.

Les is practical and Bear is entertaining.

Agreed. But I would still bring more than a Leatherman. Gotta have a HFG (huge friggin knife) out in the bush. Paul Hogan is the ultimate survivor ;)

I might order one of those Bayley customs and try it out. It looks pretty damn good if you ask me. I wonder what Bear would think of a Busse or Chris Reeve One Piece knife.

And what did happen in Antarctica? I think I missed a whole season of adventures.

Hey bud what injuries did he suffer in Antarctica?

He was para-skiiing during some documentary (not a Man V. Wild taping) and crashed, breaking his shoulder in several places.

The Bailey-Grylls has a 22month wait, last I asked.

Holy crap that's too long. I just emailed the same question.

Bear broke his shoulder kite skiing across Antarctica. He was on his way to climb a remote unclimbed peak when he fell and broke his shoulder.

I know that many have criticized bear for his shows. He doesn't go out all alone like Les does but he does a somewhat different type of show. He is an entertainer, and his shows are designed with that in mind. I find them entertaining most of the time and I don't take it as seriously as some apparently do.

One thing about him I didn't know is just how much he does for charity. He seems to be a humanitarian that does a whole lot for a myriad of causes. You won't catch me doing some of the dumb things he does (I'm certainly never going to drink my own piss out of a snakeskin) but I'm impressed with many of his good works.

Oh, and the Bayley knife may be great, but $700 would buy be a couple of Busse knives. Much better investment, in my opinion.
