Man vs. Wild

Bear broke his shoulder kite skiing across Antarctica. He was on his way to climb a remote unclimbed peak when he fell and broke his shoulder.

I know that many have criticized bear for his shows. He doesn't go out all alone like Les does but he does a somewhat different type of show. He is an entertainer, and his shows are designed with that in mind. I find them entertaining most of the time and I don't take it as seriously as some apparently do.

One thing about him I didn't know is just how much he does for charity. He seems to be a humanitarian that does a whole lot for a myriad of causes. You won't catch me doing some of the dumb things he does (I'm certainly never going to drink my own piss out of a snakeskin) but I'm impressed with many of his good works.

Oh, and the Bayley knife may be great, but $700 would buy be a couple of Busse knives. Much better investment, in my opinion.

Bear's accomplishments are pretty amazing and inspirational. Whether someone likes his show or not, Climbing Everest, navigating the Arctic, being in the British SAS, breaking his back and recovering to do all the stuff he does, charity work, motivational speaking, etc.

Its more then most people could say...

As for his show the new episode "Bears Ultimate Survival Guide" is probably the best of all of the episodes IMO. He explains that the fundamental rule of survival is to stay put, but in his show he's trying to teach people what to do if they absolutely have to get themselves out of that situation.

While Les wins for realism and a lot of people hate on Bear because he really isn't lost in the wilderness, I've learned more from Man Vs Wild then from Survivorman. I've always been pretty knowledgeable about wilderness survival. But after watching Man Vs Wild I've learned tree and rock climbing techniques, interesting shelters, what to do you if fall through the ice, etc.

While realistically I wouldn't wanna do half of the stuff Bear does in a survival situation, it is interesting to watch, and it is interesting stuff to learn/know.

Man Vs Wild saved the lives of two kids who fell through the ice into a lake, according to them they remembered what Bear did and just did that and managed to survive.

My issue with Bear is that he begins his episodes with saying " I am going to show you how to get out alive" Meanwhile 98% of the crap he does will get you killed.

Bayley knife at $625-$650.?! Nope. Not for me.

$125. RAT 4, orange G10 handle
$250. vacation (camping for a week)
$80. big ol' steak dinner for me & the wife when we get back
$125. another RAT 4, to stimulate the economy
$45. buy my son a big ol' SAK

$650.?! uh-uh. Bear's cool, but not that cool. (I do hope he gets well soon though.)

thx - cpr

i enjoy the show, but i also enjoy "living lohan" and the "kardashians", its all entertainment, but i dont take a lotta what is on the lohans or kardashians very seriously, & i dont take man vs wild real seriously either, with the weird stuff he eats & the unthinkable things he drinks, and the spelunking/rock climbing/jumping around like a damn fool/etc is not something most folks should attempt in a survival situation imho, if bear breaks a leg they medevac him out, if you break your leg in a situation like that ya are dead. so like i say i enjoy the show but i get very little usefull info from it for survival.

imho the grylls knife is overpriced for what you get, you can get a busse or even a mad dog for less money and have a better knife imho,
