ok, maybe it's not mandatory. but it's something that's just for fun. granted i nearly NEVER bring anything glass with me into the bush, especially beer bottles. but around the house, camping with the friends, or just as a party trick (though i'm sure everyone here has bottle openers and doesn't like scratching up knives) here is a way to look cool and open a bottle. maybe i shouldn't be scratching up knives like this, but frankly, i do far worse to them on a daily basis. just trying to have fun with a review here.
sorry mark if this upsets you as the maker haha. knifes dirty from getting the fire going, it's not rust if you see red, just cedar dust i promise.
as for the fatwood, maybe i'm anal, but i like ripping off all the shards sticking on on my fatwood because it tends to pull and get caught in things and generally just dirty up my stuff in a pack. so i rip all the little shards off and make little bundles like this which are awesome.
anyone else have this strange and undefendable habit? haha
1-grip bottle JUST beolow the cap
SAM_0312.jpg

2-place knife spine between the knuckle of your index finger and the bottle cap, at an upward angle.
SAM_0316.jpg

3-apply a "twisting" pressure to the knife and the cap will pop off
SAM_0314-1.jpg

4-obviously this can be done with any hard thin object

5-don't yell at my for abusing a nice knife, it's survived this maneuver unharmed MANY times.

I am reporting knife abuse. You should not be allowed knives. :p

My neighbors do that all the time.. just a lot lower quality of knives.

I used this trick with my hatchet just this weekend. Too lazy to walk down to the kitchen and get an opener.:D

It's a good skill, but shouldn't you be opening a real beer? :p (j/k)

can't have a W&SS thread with out a little beer snobbery... :D

Lol I actually expected it sooner. It was the only pop-top in the house. I mostly am a gin drinker to be fair. Sometimes I take a beer into the bush with me though. In a can so it can be crushed and carried.

It's a good thing you didn't use a mora. You would have gotten the snobbery on both the beer AND the knife front.:D

So I suppose someone has gotta say it (stops to put asbestos undies..) WHY DONT BEER COME IN PLASTIC BOTTLES?! Soda does..fruit juice does..WATER does! Its not like its gonna sit around the house to go stale IS IT?!! (ok..rant over..back to your regular programming.)

I will pass on the plastic beer bottle thank you very much..I dont take VOC's with my Ales.

A bic lighter works very well in this fashion.

yuh, for occasional bottle opening duties, sure.

make a habit of always using a bic for this and you run a very real risk of rupturing the casing.

which i really, really don't reccomend.

Lol this might be the best argument i've seen yet for wide bladed knives ;)

i have also discovered that I can use my school ring to do the same thing. Although i haven't perfected it yet...my hand always seems to get a little beer on it in the process.

you just put your hand over the bottle with the ring catching the edge of the cap and rock your hand forward to pop it off.

I've done this a number of times at parties when someone forgot to bring a bottle opener. Saves some macho idiot breaking his teeth.

Isn't that the truth!!!

My only issue would be the hand...after 8 to 12 of those, you're fine motor skills start to deteriorate...could be hazardous :D

Although I'm more of a Micro-Brew snob, I do like Bud's aluminum bottles for camping and I've been known to pack a couple of Guinness can's in on backpacking trips:D

Although it seems anal, I do like your fat wood bundles...if cold and wet, it would really save you from having to use your knife to cut smaller pieces.

Haha thank you for bringing up the fatwood. I'm sure it was better suited for another thread bur I wanted to add more to this one.

And yes I agree this does lend itself to a longer knife !! I have a longhufnter in mind now. Thanks guys haha I really need another knife.

You can buy it in plastic but it kills the taste. It's mainly sold to spectator venues but some liquor stores stock a little of the plastic bottles around my parts.
