Like most things, if you do it right nothing gets damaged. I have at least 20 years field experience in this technique and have never had a lighter fail or failed to get a bottle open.

I guess if you insist on being a politically correct danger avoidance champion, you could wait until the lighter was empty to reduce the potential risks.
