My anxiously awaited all black Manix 2 showed up today and...blade play. Quite a bit, actually. I've read great things about the knife and don't mean to suggest that this is an issue. I'm sure I just got an anomaly.

That being said, I also found the lock to be far too stiff for my liking so I'm just going to send it back and get a refund.

Now my dilemma is...what's my next spyderco? Was thinking either a Native 5 in g10 or...I dunno. A second PM2 in a different color? Any other suggestions? I really want to stay away from frame locks.

I'd appreciate any input!

Sorry to hear that I actually just received my manix 2 today also and mine is in mint condition. Good luck with what ever blade you choose to replace it with.

Fwiw... although I've never owned a Manix 2, I've read a lot about them and while there's no substitute for experience... they are supposedly excellent, tough, well-built knives. Blade play can (usually) be adjusted out to imperceptibility, and stiff locks loosen-up. Instead of rushing in to get a new knife, why not give what's in hand a chance? I suspect the dilemma you have is different from the one you think.

I to own a Manix 2 and it has no blade play. At first the lock was a little stiff but after a week of edc use, it loosened up and is very nice. I love the blade design and the grip, it feels like it is a part of you while holding it.

That's odd, I've had 5 manix's now and none had blade play at all, extremely rock solid. Maybe try adjusting the pivot a bit, if that's what is making you not like the knife I'm sure it can be adjusted or sent to SFO for repair or replacement.

Thanks everyone for your feedback.

I'm really surprised too. My PM2 actually redefined how I understand "zero blade play". That thing is solid, which is why I was so surprised when I got my Manix today. And to be clear, I'm talking full on blade play, it's not like I'm really putting pressure on the blade or anything.

I did just hop out of bed, loosened all the screws, and then re tightened them, doing the pivot last. I tightened as much as I felt comfortable and there was no change. I'm hesitant to fiddle more as I really want them to accept the return.

Maybe I'll just swap it out for another one. The plastic bag that mine came in was pretty battered. Maybe it's just a lemon. I DO love the design and ergos and aesthetics. That lock is still nagging me...but maybe it just needs time.

Return it and get another Manix. As others have stated, I own several and all are have tight lockup. The bag being in poor shape tells me that your knife could have been a return.

Get another Manix, it's a great knife.

Ya it shouldnt have really any kinda blade play unless the pivot screw was just too loose. Mine is rock solid and still opens smooth as butter. The lock was a little stiff as i am use to axis locks but it did wear in quite nicely.

Blade play has been known to occur from time to time with the stepped pivot as is in the Manix 2. Many times it can be adjusted out but it is a bit quirky. Make sure you adjust the top blade stop screws as well as the pivot screws.

the lock is ok . many complain and say they "break in" on other sites (im new here and have not seen many manix discussions yet).

if your tools are right and not damaging the hardware i would tighten the pivot untill the bade will no longer deploy, then loosen the pivot in tiny turns untill the blade deploys well and its centered.

the lock is indeed tight, but its not like an axis lock. you need to just keep playing with it and your thumb will get stronger. try flicking the knife and letting your thumb slide down the lock. it does not need to be fully engaged.

the lionsteel sr series and spyderco lionspy collab are the one framelock design that addresses the primary flaw in framelocks (and to some extent liner locks) - their design has an overtravel stop that can be screwed down locking the blade open.

nutNnancy made fun of the feature which bothered me because he made such a big deal about being able to get any framelock to fail.

Thanks all for the continued thoughts. In terms of tightening the pivot screw, I tightened it until it wouldn't turn any more (both sides) and still play! So it's definitely going back.

As for the no frame locks thing, it's just a preference. I have a ZT 0566 and the lock is the thing that keeps me from ever carrying it.

Trying to re group and figure out a next purchase. I'm not sure that the Manix is a good fit, and I think part of the problem is how much I love the Pm2!

That sucks, but don't let a bad Apple turn you off. It's easy to feel deflated about something you were excited about, only to get a lemon. Both my Manixs are rock solid, with no play whatsoever, and free swinging blades when the lock is disengaged. At least exchange, and find out what one is truly supposed to be like. Best of luck to you, sir.

And I will say the locks vary, I they don't really break in substantially. In the three manixes I've owned there was substantial difference in the spring two of them would have in inoperable by many people, the third was quite easily to use, and broke in a little making it even better.

I own 5 manix2's and all of them are rock solid. I must agree with the vary of the locks some are harder to operate then the others but all of them are between the lines of how the lock should be. I would really advise you to give te model a second chance. I to am a pm2 fan and i can tell you the only knife i ever new that can get the pm2 out of the pocket is the manix2 it is a raw cutting power like no other. You just can not compare the manix and the pm but in a way there equels. Just my two cents.

Just get another one. And another and another and another and a nothr n a nothr

That's too bad about your Manix2. I'm willing to bet it was one of the very few with any issues. I have found Spyderco's QC to be top notch. But a lemon can sneak by in any company's QC dept. once in a while.

Anyway , if you're not up for trying another Manix2 then I recommend the Yojimbo2 , Native5 G10 or Sage4. I own and have carried each for an extended period of time and they are all fantastic EDC's. I would say the Yo2 is my favorite Spyderco to date. And although I'm not a fan of liner locks , I've heard nothing but praise for the Gayle Bradley.
