manix 2 ball replacement

Clear is nice, since the use of a clear plastic makes it quite obvious that it is a ball and not the carrier that is transmitting forces to lock the knife and allows one to more readily appreciatte the locking technology used.
.

Also, clear allows one to see if any debri is "gumming" up the works.

It also allows the people assembling the knives to visually verify that they got the ball in there when they put it together.

Maybe it comes from shooting 100,000 rounds through Glocks, but plastic doesn't bother me.

This is something I hadn't considered.

It also lets you take a look at the lock and appreciate how friggin' nifty the lock mechanism is.

I think the cage looks really cool as clear plastic. There was a lot of speculation last year about how durable it would be, but so far I don’t recall hearing about any problems with it. It’s silly but probably true that people would be less wary of a plastic cage if it was black or something, even if it was the same material.

The clear plastic does seem to be a little helpful in seeing dirt and grime that can build up in the lock. I took my Manix 2 apart last night to clean it. It was kind of surprising how much crud was in the mechansim, since I don’t carry it much. Here are before and after pics, though the first one is darker and not as clear...

BTW, it looks like the track in the backspacer were the ball rolls has become somewhat polished with use. That might help explain why it's smoother and easier to open and close now than when it was new.

okay guys thanks for the replies. Sorry it took me so long to get back to this one. Jabba nailed it dead on. I haven't fondled one yet so I guess I'll just have to give it a whirl.

I think the lock looks just fine, it works, and it's a bloody knife, not a supermodel... lets face it.. most spyderco fans aren't buying them because of aesthetics.. Function > Form
