I´m looking for a new EDC knife, and i´m stuck between the Spyderco Manix 2 and the Benchmade Griptilian 551

Since both are one handed opening and closing

Both have 154CM steel, and both are hollow grind

And around the same price point.

Im stuck

So what would you suggest and choose??

And at last a question, which is faster?? (the manix 2 and the Griptilian 550 the one with the deployment hole)??

manix 2 ftw. the 154cm on spyderco is made by CPM which is even better than the normal 154cm used on the grip. the manix 2's handle is also more heavy duty.

The Manix2 is heavier and wider but feels better built in the hand. The Grip is tough but feels like a toy. The one thing I've never been able to get over with mine is the overly fat/roundish handles and the hollow "thwack" sound they make. Both have excellent locks. I'd probably opt for the Spyderco. Don't forget that Benchmade has a Doug Ritter version in S30V also.. but it's about $120.

Stag Arms also has a Manix 2 in FFG S30V for around the same price as the Ritter. I'd probably go for the regular Manix 2 over the regular Griptilian, although both are fine knives.

griptilian for me... the plastic handle never bothered me and imo it has way better ergos and carry better than the overly large manix 2.

I went with the Manix 2 and never had cause to regret it. I wasn't a big fan of the way the grip felt in my hands and I'm not a fan of plastic handles, so the choice was pretty easy for me. That varies from person to person, of course.

I was a die hard Benchmade fan, have a 550 grip, and 15020 also an axis lock from the bone collector.

Then I got the Manix 2. I was blown away, it's night and day. Manix 2 is a fricking tank that won't stop. Then you eyeball the Manix 2 XL if you're into beafy.

I'm glad I have both, but I'd go Manix over Grip any day.

I myself went from the Benchmade Grip to the regular manix 2. I gotta say there was no looking back for my I love my manix 2. It is a lot heavier in the pocket but I still wouldn't go back. Don't get me wrong I like Benchmade knives a lot but the maxix 2 is superior to the grip.

They are two different classes of knives IMO. I would say opening speed is about the same. While the Axis lock is reliable and fun to play with, I would pick the Manix 2 as the better knife. Just my opinion.

Given the choice would pick Griptilian. Manix bigger and heavier - less convenient to carry.

Deffinatley the ManixII. The ergos are great and it may look bigish but the tip up carry the small butt makes it carry in pocket real well. I've got two and they both see a lot of pocket time.

All 154CM is made by Crucible Steel. 154CM is a melt alloy
CPM 154 is also made by Crucible steel. CPM154 is made using a powder metal process.

Both the Griptilian and the Manix have 154CM blades.

I have a mini-grip and a Manix 2. I also have a number of other knives with 3 1/2" blades. The Manix2 gets far more pocket time than any of the others.

I have no idea which is faster. I never worry about how fast I can open a knife. All my knives are for working, only.

Maxnix-2 would be my overall choice. The Griptillian may be a little easier to flip closed with one hand given their type of locking mechanism. Can you do that as well with the Manix, but it is a little more difficult in my experience. However, other than that, the Manix-2 is a great knife!

I have both a Stag Arms S30V Manix II, and a BM 551. I also prefer the Manix II. It seems like a higher quality knife overall, and I like the G10 over the FRN. While the plasticy "thwak" isn't a deal killer, it just makes me feel the Grip is not in the same league as the Manix II.

Both are good knives. The regular Manix 2 is big and heavy as has been mentioned, the sprint runs with the skeletonized liners are noticeably lighter but also more expensive than most Grips. The Griptilian will fit in a sheath better, or at least it will be easier to find one it fits in, if that matters. The Manix does feel less "plasticky", but I think both knives are plenty strong. I've been alternating EDCs for a while between Griptilian and Manix 2 and I'm happy with either one.

Both are very good, you cant go wrong. But I have to pick a side, and the side I pick, Benchmade Griptilian. My 551 is a tank of a knife, the handles feel plasticky to some, but I like them, this knife has never felt like a toy to me, its been my favorite since I got it.
