Recommendation? Manix 2 with G-10 (dark blue ) S110V , found a great deal and it's on the way ...but now second guessing the steel .

My concern is for the steel , S110V . Seems like mixed reviews , but many chipping problems .

(Yeah , did my research ,mostly after the purchase . Not the best way !) But , hey , BNIB for ~$120 !

So: great hardness and ER , but fragile ? So then , carefully cut mainly soft stuff ,or ....?

I have always avoided the super hard , high ER types in favor of toughness ; but thought I'd try a small folder .Toughness maybe less critical .

Do I have reason to be worried ? 🥺

Good sharpening skills and the correct abrasives are key to S110V. Diamond or CBN, preferably bonded instead of just plated, though the latter will do an acceptable job. S110V is a bit sensitive to sharpening in my experience. If done right, it's a great steel, certainly not the toughest out there but I have not personally found it fragile. Not the best choice for "hard use" but for just cutting stuff up it works fine. Great wet weather steel, as it is very corrosion resistant.

Here are my two main S110V users. I like thin edges, and my use case does allow for it to work. These do have microbevels to help with edge durability.

Thanx ! Great info . I believe I can make good use of this steel, in a small folder .

I have plenty of "hard use " , both fixed and folding . No reason to push this one too far .

I also felt somewhat reassured by this :

I was also worried about it, but after two years I didn't experience chipping or any other problems, although I microconvexed the edge for extra stability on my Millie. A less used Manix 2 still has the factory edge. I use DMT plates, the spyderco extra fine ceramic and diamon loaded strops with shaving sharp results.

Thanks ! Good point about the microconvexing and sharpening tips . :)

I’ve got a Manix2 in S110v. Not a fan of the steel, but I naturally gravitate toward steels that are easier to sharpen and more well rounded in attributes. It was probably a bad choice for me, but that’s on me. I found it to be “chippy” and a beast to sharpen.

My wife has the knife now. She took it because she likes the color of the scales. It hasn’t been outside the drawer in about two years, and hasn’t chipped in about that long.

No cause for concern . You will enjoy it and it will do well for you. Good deal and well done 👍.

Congrats, it's a great steel - enjoy the knife. I've chipped Spyderco M390 and 4V so far, and broken Maxamet, but never damaged S110V. Also, it's basically stainless, close to LC200N and Magnacut wrt corrosion resistance, and better edge retention than both.

I hone my Military in S110V on a coarse DMT and finish with a few light strokes on an ultra fine DMT -- that produces a hair popping edge that cuts soft/fibrous stuff like a miniature chainsaw. S110V holds an edge for a long time. Haven't had any problems with chipping.

Thanks to all ! ☺️

Feeling much better now .

More eager than anxious .

It's going to be my very first "stab", at using a super ER type steel .

It's good to venture into uncharted waters ...sometimes .

This would make an interesting thread topic ! 🤔

My wife usually just tolerates my accumulating .

But very rarely , she will disappear one of them !

Most, I notice in one of her work areas ...eventually .

Some few , I've never seen again .

I especially wonder about that Cold Steel , fully serrated , Tiger Claw karambit . Not normally a knife she would covet , or even want to handle .

I was shocked, initially , when she grabbed it ,out of the blue . Thought she might actually carry it . Hoped she would .

Heck ...maybe she does CC it ? I'm hesitant to ask .

That's really great ! I'm envious .

Really don't have anyone close, that would want mine ,other than to sell maybe .

Wife always says , "You better just stay alive ...because all your "junk" is going straight to the Goodwill ! "
I'll give ya my address and even pay for shipping 😁

She's almost 10 so I hope I can keep her interest. I thought about trying to swap internals on my native 5 lightweight and blurple. If the blurple will take the S35VN blade I may train her on it. I'd like to put my s110 in the frn because it gets great traction with gloves on.

Goodwill is brutal. I may make a Pricelist for my collection and put it in the safe. hopefully she finds it after I die

As the saying goes " When I die, I hope my wife doesn't sell all my stuff for what I told her I paid"

If you decide you need to part with the manix 2 because it just isn't for you let me know I was tempted with the model when I bought the native. Kinda wish I went that route.
