Manix 2 XL a poor mans Strider SMF?

Not trying to start a flame war here, let me start by sayin I have owned a stainless Endura 4 combo edge for about 7 years and its my most carried knife. I love how thin it is.

I bought a Buck/Strider 882 back when they first came out. I love the thing. I love the shape of the blade and the handle. I wish it wasn't a serrated model, but I think almost all the buck striders were. I have a really hankering for an SMF, but I would also like a new Spyderco and it's much more within my reach.

For a long time, I went back and for between wanting a Police 3 or a Military, but I think maybe the Manix 2 XL is the right knife for me.

Of course I'd like to buy all of them, but that isn't currently an option.

The manix XL is just an awesome design. Fits me great in every grip. Beefy but slicey blade. It'd be the folder I'd grab if I could only grab one. I don't know how it compares to a Strider, but I would imagine it compares favorably to any knife at any price.

I have never owned a Strider, but the blade thickness of the Manix 2 xl is nowhere close to most Striders. In fact, either the Tuff or Superleaf are closer to poor man's Striders.

I would argue that the Manix 2 XL is a better knife, but I have no dog in this fight.

I have the SmF.
My Step-brother has the Manix 2 XL.

I like the original Manix and Mini Manix (back-lock), but prefer the Strider to the Manix 2...that thing is just jimping overload.

But other than a similarity in size, they are quite different knives.

The manix 2 xl is closer to the sng in size.

The super leaf reminds me more of a strider if you are looking for a striderish spyderco.

Be prepared, no spyderco duplicates Striders special tactical lock stick or rock.:playful:

Wait a minute, are you saying that there's a reason for them to have lock rock and blade play? Is being tacticalish a reason?

I own an SMF, SNG, Manix G10, LW and Manix 2. The Manix line of knives are fantastic heavy use folders. But they are not in the same league as a Strider. My SnG has a thicker blade then the Manix and I like the ergos of the Strider much better. Plus Strider has a better warranty for abuse damage then Spyderco. (and this is from people that actually used Strider for a repair.) In fact if you look at Striders FB page and see posts where people have had issues, Josh from Strider jumps in and ask the knife be sent to him for repair.

As for lock rock and stickiness. Well the new lock profile has done away with most of the lock rock. But talking to actual Strider owners, lock rock seems to come into play with people that repetitively flick open the knife hard thinking that will break it in faster. They are jamming two different metals together and creating uneven accelerated wear. Now stickiness is there in a new Strider until the titanium and blade steel mesh. But it goes away quickly. My SnG unlocks as smooth as a Sabenza 25 that I owned and it opens as smooth as any non bearing knife I have ever used. Out of the five Striders I own or did own, none had lock rock, blade play, late lockup or stickiness that did not go away.

Yeah....Spyderco's never have lock issues like lock rock, blade play etc. Look up Seki Pop, Spyderco Lock Rock or Spyderco Sticky Lock.

Dude, I put a little joking smiley face emoji thing after my post. I was obviously kidding. I own 3 striders , I just like to poke delusion kool-aid drinking mick lovers like yourself Because it's easy.

Full disclosure, I don't own a Strider, but I've handled a few. I'd probably have an SMF if they had a lefty clip position. I think the Tuff is probably the closest thing to a Strider in the Spyderco lineup.

They do make them occasionally for lefties....Here is an SnG

The Manix 2 is a great knife.

Personally I prefer liner / frame type locks for ease of disassembly and reassembly compared to axis / ball bearing type locks.

The Manix 2's tip is what I would call quite thin. I broke the tip of my sprint BD-30P off cutting into some thick cardboard. Wasn't very happy about that.

However, the thinness of the tip makes it very good for delicate, precise work.

Sorry, I can 't help myself but I have to toss my EDC into the mix of choices. It is the Spyderco Gayle Bradley and it will do everything you want a knife to do at a decent price. It is rock solid and doesn't have slippery scales.

If you are unfamiliar with a Gayle Bradley, here is some good video info. The second video compares it to a SMF.

I've thought of the manix that way before but like many said, not as thick. The new BM loco is probably closer to the overbuilt nature but I don't have a strider, so maybe I'm wrong.

I've had both the Manix 2 XL and Strider SMF in my collection.

I no longer have the Strider.

The ergonomics on the Manx 2 XL absolutely blow the Strider away. Both use heavy duty locks. Both have great fit-and-finish (at least on my examples). Manix 2 XL has better blade grind and geometry for usual cutting tasks (Striders come obtuse as hell from the factory). I don't use my folders as a prybar (I have Strider LM in my bag for that). And last of all, no rock lock on the Manix 2 XL, unlike the SMF which had the new lockface geometry.

The upcoming Spyderco Chinook 4 should be interesting to compare to other "hard use" knives.
