"Breaking in" is not necessary. The perceived difficulty in operating the lock on this knife arises from the design of the lock itself. Unlike the Axis Lock, the ball bearing works independently of its intersection with the handle scales. The cage simply cannot exert even pressure when pushed from only one side. On an Axis knife, the lock blocking the tang extends beyond the handle itself, reducing the pressure needed to move it. The Manix does have a nice, hefty spring, too.
You basically have to pinch the ball cage between index finger and thumb to actuate it.
The ball bearing will wear extremely evenly, so I hope yours is as smooth as it should be. Give the "pinch" method a try.
