Hopefully a good steel to match.... S90V or ZDP-189 or Aogami Super would be perfect.

I'd like to see the Hitachi Blue Steel in a new Manix. I bought one of the Caly versions but I just don't like that handle. A non-stainless Manix would be a dream come true (not that I'm selling my three stainless originals!).

I guess I'm one of the only people that remembers the XL Manix 2 being mentioned before the Manix 2 came out (and have been waiting anxiously for its arrival ever since).

Read the post, its not talking about an XL MANIX 2 its talking of the original back locks!

Who wouldn't want the higher quality steels?

Lol they're not higher quality; steel quality is very subjective. But the first two are more expensive and have better wear resistance. The ones Knarfeng suggested are cheaper and tougher, which would be an important aspect in a hard use knife.

Suddenly I don't feel like such an idiot for holding off on buying a Manix 2 for so long. Bring on the new versions!

Elmax or M390 would be better than S35VN or CTS-BD30P in nearly every aspect other than toughness for M390. Better hardness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, grain refinement, edge stability. Not cheap, but certainly a premium steel.

I do agree that the other two would better compliment a hard use knife, but exactly how hard use does a knife have to be? Did somebody ever break the old Manix 2's blade in S30V often enough to spark a desire for a tougher steel? From what I've read in the past, the lock failed long before the blade ever did. And I think in every hard use video Ankerson ever made, problems don't emerge until the spine gets whacked, the folder is batoned, or the folder gets used as a prybar. I think for most sensible people, hard use would stop at whittling the 2 by 4.

I agree, those two steels would be great! Elmax takes an edge so nicely and easily for me; still have yet to try M390. I do think that a steel like ZDP-189 might be ill-suited for a hard-use knife after seeing so many cases of it chipping (you don't have to do something ridiculously stupid with a knife to make the blade chip) or even breaking. But most other steels should be plenty tough.
