I'm looking for a good tough spyderco. I love my D4 that I recently got but it is really only good for a boxcutter which it is great for. I am looking for my second spyderco and I want something that is tougher and can endure more abuse.
I have been told the Manix is the benchmark for tough knives so I would like some opinions from owners of the knife. Also I am wondering about the captain. It looks tough. So anyone who has some advice on a good tough spyderco I would appreciate it. I love the quality of the brand and now I need a better knife than the D4. I also plan on getting a E4W just to have a waved knife :D

like i said in the spyderco forum...ATR, Chinook (the first one is a beast, i cant vouch for II or III) D'allara and the Manix. i edc the manix for about six months at my work and it held up to anything i could throw at it. if you dont mind a lil more weight in your pocket i'd say get one (the bigger one) if you can. my second pick would be the atr if you dont mind metal scales...its a tough knife...a chinook I is hard to come by so the d'allara would be my next pic.

I have the full size manix. It is very durable, stays sharp lond and tough as nails. I recently bought another one since it is now discontinued. It is my favorite knife and I will carry one untill I lose or break them and cant find another. For me it is definately "the one".

The Manix is definitely a beast and also discontinued. Most of the models still available are the combo edge type. If you are really wanting one, I would suggest taking the plunge before the CE models dry up, as well.

The Chinook is still in production and is a sturdy knife like the Manix.

I have both a PE manix and PE mini-manix. Both are great knives though I EDC the mini-manix more often due to size. Both are great outdoor knives useful for hunting, camping
and hiking. They are very solid heavy duty knives with good steel and good designs.

Either the Manix or the D'allara are good choices. The discontinued prices of the D'allara make it particularly attractive. Since both have been discontinued though, you had better get both :)

If you want to spend more $, I've been really happy with my BG42 Millitary -- very tough, rigid, light and sharp. It also rides a lot nicer in your pocket then either the manix or d'allara

I second the BG-42 Military. If i could only own one knife it would be that. I carry it daily and it really is a beast. I didn't like linerlocks at all until I got my Military. It's the best linerlock I've ever handled. Definitely get the BG-42 Military or the S90V if your funds allow.

I have the bg42 military and the full size manix. big difference between the two. the manix is quite a bit more robust in all aspects - it really is built like a tank. it sounds like you are shutting a bank vault door when the manix locks up. that being said, I typically carry the military over the manix - it really does carry better because of the weight and slimness. the manix is a beast - would definitely say that it ranks way up there for the title of "toughest folder".

I have manix and chinook 3, both are great knives and either would probably quench your thirst for a stout blade. Between the two I would give the nod to the manix due to blade shape (tip girth) for maximum strength.

I just recently picked up a Mini-Manix, and my first thought out of the box was:"My God, what does the full-sized one look like?!" It was a significant step up in bulk from anything else that I've carried. But, after about a week, I hardly notice it. The full flat grind makes for a nice slicer, despite how huge the knife is. I love the lockup. My new EDC.
