Lately I've taken a liking to heavy duty folders. As far as I can tell, the Manix and Chinook qualify here.

Which one would you recommend for someone who has big clumsy hands, occasionally beats the hell out of knife, also uses it for fine detailed work, and hates serrated edges? ;)

If you think of something better that I overlooked, if the clip is reversible for lefties, I'll be happy to consider it. :D

I have and used both knives, it all comes down to what works best for you.I prefer the chinook cause of its bowie type blade, and for me it just works and feels better in the hand then the manix...you cant go wrong with either of these knives....

I like both to. The chinook fits my hand like it was made for it, but I think the manix blade is better for EDC. Need to get both. I hope to do that.

I have a chinook 2 and a manix and they are both excellent the manix is a more practical everyday knife imo

I have to agree. I have the flat ground Chinook (the 3 model I guess), and the full size Manix. I like both. The manix fits my large mitts a little better than the Chinook. The Manix is also better received by people when you open it where they can see you. The Chinook isn't as "politically correct looking" as the Manix. You can't go wrong with either as they are both excellent blades.

I just got a full size manix, and a chinook 3 on thursday. They are very similar in feel (to my hand), but I agree with some of the other guys..the manix seems better suited for EDC type cutting chores, where the chinook seems more specialized....both very impressive knives though. The more narrow tip of the chinook makes me feel the manix is a little more rugged....but Im very pleased with both so far!!!!

Don't forget to come on over to the other spydie forums: www.spyderco.com/forums

I agree with the Manix over the Chinook. The Chinook seems like it might be a better skinner though.

check out the spyderco d'allara as well. its sturdy and strong, and costs less than the manix and chinook.

By specialized, you mean, made for self-defense?
I own an old Chinook I with combo edge and consider "upgrading" to either a Chinook III or a Manix. I wouldn't exclude that I might use it for some occasional utility work, but my priority lies in SD.
So let us focus on the SD qualities of both knives for a second...
The Chinook "looks" meaner, but does the shape of its blade give it any advantage in combat? Does the tip make it better for stabbing and the high belly more efficient at cutting?
Or would the Manix be the better choice because it's available with partially serrated edge?
Does anyone know if Spyderco plans to release a (partially) serrated Chinook III? (Okay, I guess I am dreaming here ;) )

I've owned both, and the Chinook was by and far my favorite. It's a preference thing. Both are rock solid and cut like lasers.

The Chinook was designed by Mr. Keating specifically for self defense/knife fighting. The blade shape was designed specifically to enable it to be used for a move he calls the "back cut". That move is also why the lock needed to be so strong, as (the way I understand it) you are actually cutting with the spine side of the point. The drop point of the Manix cannot do this nearly as effectively as the upswept tip of the Chinook.

The Chinook would probably also make a better moose skinner than the Manix :D

I would have to say Chinook for SD, Manix for utility.

It should be said that the Chinook's tip is much sharper and penetrates better than the Manix's, and while it make look upswept, the tip actually aligns with the center of a straight stab perfectly, while the deeper belly will make for deeper cuts on slashes. I find that the added belly and the pointier tip make for better utility advantages over the Manix, as well, but that's obviously a personal preference.

True, but I would add that the Chinook has some strange appeal (at least to me) when you hold it in your hand. It is a damn sexy knife (more so than the Manix), which really doesn't come across in pictures. But detail work is much easier with the dropped point than with the upswept point and on Ergos, I would also give the Manix the nod even though they are both pretty much as good as they come in that department.
