I have been longing for a Spyderco Manix for a long time and I'm about to get one. First though, I'd really like to know about one thing. Usually you see the Manix listed as ambidextrous, tip up/down carry, but sometimes you see pictures of it with pocket clip holes for tip down carry only. For an example on Spyderco's home page it says clearly:
Carries ambidextrously with a steel clip that positions the knife for tip up/down carry.

but at the same time this picture is shown:

What's the story behind this? Did Spyderco start making tip down only Manixes at first and then went over to making them with all four positions or what? I tried searching the forum, but I couldn't find any answers.

I just want to make sure I get a four positioned one when I make my order.

My mini-Manix is about a year old now. It is drilled for 4-way carry. Don't know firsthand about the large Manix, but I suspect that it is the same. The knife in the photo may be a prototype used for the catalog photo.

Early models had different size torx screws in the rear of the folder vs the pivot and lockbar and a different looking wider spaced traction groove or non sharpened serrations as Sal calls them on the spine for thumb grip behind the Spyder hole.

New models are T8 size Torx throughout the folder, including the pocket clip. Older ones before the change will be T8 for the pivot and lockbar and T6 Torx sizes for the rest of them.

I can't recall on the clip but it seems there were some posts back when Spyderco made some changes to the four way carry option and some complained about them calling them the 'swiss cheese' look so it could be that the earlier models were drilled for one side only or perhaps just one mode only. I really can't say on that with 100% certainty.

I have one of the 2nd generation and it has a lot of holes. The one in the picture looks like a 1st generation.

I like to have the option for TU or TD but don't care for all the holes.

My Manix is still one of my favorite Spydies.
