manix sharpening

Got my first Spyderco, a "new" old-stock Manix, apparently NIB. Looks and feels awesome, enough to overcome my bias for fixed-blades, but is not very sharp. Best way to sharpen one of these, anyone, especially as I am ignorant of the edge profile and dynamics. Thanks.cwd

The logical place to begin is: what do you have to sharpen it with? I sharpen mine freehand on diamond hones at about forty degrees included, but I also use mine rather hard. For light to normal use, the steel will take a thirty degree included edge and hold it well, and be a lot sharper. Most folks around here seem to have a SharpMaker that they use for this stuff, and a few just send them back to Spyderco for a fresh factory edge when they get dull.

My Manix and my mini are sharpened to thirty degrees inclusive and maintained on the sharpmaker. Congratulations on finding the Manix I have gotten many years of enjoyment and hard use from mine.

You could get the Sharpmaker kit and a couple of diamond rods and a couple of extra-fine rods for it. I like the 30-degree edge with S30V. Use the diamond rods to profile the edge. After that, use the regular rods in the kit to sharpen it. The extra-fine rods make a nice polished edge. If you want to go further, you could made a strope system.

I've done mine both ways, Sharpmaker and freehand using the 701 Profiles from Spyderco. Either way I sharpen, I use a 30 degree inclusive bevel and that's worked pretty well for me. Mine gets used infrequently, but I do carry it when we're hiking or camping, so it does get some campsite type use. For my occasional outdoor use, the edge has held up very well at 30 degrees.

I use mine strickly as a work/ city knife. I use it in the factory, opening and falling boxes, cutting cable ties, scraping with the back etc. 30 degree is plenty durable.
