Decided to move up to a tough, medium-big folder with good steel. The Spyderco Manix and BM 710 seem to be fan favoritse from each of their respective camps. If anyone has either of these two, I'd love their input.
Thanks in advance.

Good luck, everyone will be biased to one side or the other.

Try to find a shop where you can see which fits better in your hand, and which one has the open/closing you like best.

They are both great!

runT1ME, I had a 710 once upon a time. It never made it into my rotation, but that's not because of anything wrong with the knife itself. It was a very nicely built knife that seemed like it would do a lot of work. I had the M2 version. Just a little big for me, and it didn't work for my hands (hot spots), but it WAS a nice knife. Not too helpful, I know, but I thought I'd get the ball rolling.

Sincerely,
Anthony C. Paulin

I have a Manix and an 806D2

the AFCK is a good knife, but the Manix is great. Great to hold, great to use.

never had any contact with a Manix, but if i were a knife, i'd make out with my 710. great design. comfortable, grippy, TONS of blade.

I have both, but they are different in many ways. It realy depends on your intended usage for each knife. The 710 is lighter, slimmer, yet longer in blade length, the Manix is wider, heavier, flat ground and probably better ergonomics ( for my hand ). I prefer the Axis lock of the 710 to the lockback, but both are heavy duty. I carry the Manix when out in the bush, the 710 is more discreet and concealable, thus gets more wear time in the city. Both are extremely well made, and I can easily justify owning both.

They both look pretty good to me! So had to decide....

Primary use would be de-animation of computer boxes, and hopefully never SD, but i'd use forward grip if it came to that. Thanks a lot for the photo!

Dude try a Chinook II, I just LOVE Bowies. Btn the two you're looking at I'd probably go with the Manix, however I'd rather have and 806D2 than either. Also check out the Al Mar Sere 2K and the Buck 880SP, good luck :)

If this is going to be your main usage, then I would also look at the one in the middle of this pic, it is IMHO the best of the 3 for slicing and the most comfortable to carry.

That looks pretty nice! Whats it called? I looked on the swamp rat web page and couldn't find it. Also, I hate to open up this can of worms, but liner-lock vs. lockback and axis? Can it really compete? :D

Thanks for the input so far.

It's called the Rat Trap, certainly looks like a nice utility folder. Don't expect it to be nearly as tough as SRKW's fixed blades though.

Manix or 710?
Manix for utility chores, 710 for self-defense.

The Rat Trap looks outrageous. Love both the blade and handle shape (that handle shape usually works particularly well for me for forward grip). I do, however, think you need your head examined if you choose any liner lock -- even Swamp Rat's -- over an axis lock or Spyderco's superlative lockback, for a heavy use folder. If you're not a liner lock bigot like I am, then the Rat Trap seems solid. Looking forward to handling one.

I haven't handled a Manix yet either. Just from the looks and what I know of Spyderco's construction, I think it'd be a fantastic choice. Need to handle it to see how it really feels, though. The blade shape and grind on the manix is my absolute fave for most folder uses; I find it a higher-performance blade shape than the Rat Trap's drop point and 710's recurved drop point. And nothing beats a big round hole for opening mechanism; and you can throw a cable tie on there for an impromptu wave.

The 710 is the gold standard for 4" folders, in my mind. Available in M-2, handle comfortable and secure in every grip from hammer to sabre to reverse to pakal and everything else, reliable and strong axis lock, good blade shape, good QA.

Frankly, I don't think you'd be unhappy with either the Manix or 710, or, for that matter, the Rat Trap, if you trust liner locks. All three knives seem particularly well-designed, and (based on reports) all three seem to have high production values.

I have the 710HS and the Manix. They are two of my favorite knives. You absolutely can't go wrong with either, and get both if at all possible.

The Manix feels more secure in my hand, and the G-10 on the 710 feels slippery compared to the Manix. I think the 710 is a great design -- a real classic. I think the Manix is a work of genious.

The Manix came with about 15 degree bevels so it was really easy to sharpen with a Sharpmaker. The 710 came dull and with horribly uneven bevels. I have an Edge Pro to on order to I will make it the way I want it. I think it's a fluke -- teh edges on my Grip and Mini-Grip were great.

I hate the B2T coating. I mean I really hate it. It's already all scratched up. (I know it doesn't bother some people though.)

Even so -- and this is purely subjective -- there's something about the 710 that makes it seem to me that it's higher quality. Maybe I'm impressed when I see those hefty PB washers, and feel the smooth action with the Axis lock. Since I got it, the 710 has taken over as my main heavy duty folder.

My next purhase will be the 710 in 154CM and satin finish. Go figure.

I've heard this mentioned before, how does one do this, how does this work? Especially anybody out there with pics????? I got lots of Spyders I may like to try this with btw I'd get a Chinook II and an 806D2 but btn the knives originally asked about, go the the Manix. :)

I've used and abused my Military for a couple of years and the liner lock has never shown any sign of failure - then again, I do hesitate to stab it hard into anything, like when puncturing a plastic drum. No such hesitation when using the Manix.

crap! Benchmade just released a mini-skirmish (635). ::sigh:: Now I have 3 good knives to chose from. I think i'll have to decide between the Manix and the 635 though. Lockback vs. frame-lock.... which to chose. Titanium handle vs. G10.... so many choices. Without a doubt, i'm liking the skirmish's blade shape the best though.

love that manix. love the pronounced choil & butt curve. most folder handles seem to potentially guide your fingers onto the edge if you ever stabbed into something solid. i also love the manix' fatass blade design. overall the thing looks very comfortable & very functional. that knife pretty much has everything i've been looking for in a folder, can't wait to handle it & either deny or confirm my expectations.

btw, is there a difference in feel between PB & nylon washers? i seriously doubt you can wear out lubed nylon washers in a single lifetime, i could be wrong.

If I were you, I'd decide based on handle feel and blade shape. For me, I greatly favor a full flat-ground leaf-shaped blade w/ hole over sabre-ground recurve, but if you dig the recurve, that 635 looks awesome.

spydiefan: Go to a hardware store and buy the biggest cable ties you can. Take one, attach it to the top of the hole, tighten it up so it's very snug against the hole, and cut off the part of the tie sticking out. What's left is the little plastic lock nub, hanging off the top of the blade hole. Stick in pocket, pull out, and voila! She ees opeen!
