I scored this Mankel forge and a wacky cool farrier's anvil and some tools for 50$. anyone else own a Mankel?

Awesome Sam,
First thing I would do is take that blower intake sheild off and install a gate valve between it and the forge. Unless you just collect cool stuff and don't plan on using it. Where's the anvil, bro?
 
No need to do that, it was made that way so no need to mess with it it's not broken. It is DC though, so I gotta figure out that. These were professionally engineered blown burners and forges, friend of mine has his running at 5/8ths of a Psi running welding heats.

I don't understand your comment, "Unless you just collect cool stuff and don't plan on using it." I use things, i'm no collector.

Nice price, Ken Mankel is a friend of mine and made those forges in his Cannonsburg, MI shop about 45 nimutes from my shop.
 
small world! I saw on the website the Mankels sold the business.

The old fellow who sold it to me was the original owner and acquired it at the oklahoma farrier's college. I got the whole kit for 100$ but sold the horse shoes and some shoeing tools to the blacksmith/farrier supply in town for 50$, kept this forge and the anvil, a rounding hammer and some tongs and rasps.

We had some demos with the mankel. it was nice and simple.

Some folks just collect machines and tools with no intent to use them. I'm glad you don't understand that mentality... It can be such a waste. I've got a neighbor with an old stone treadle wheel and several anvils, sitting in his landscaping. He has no validated attachment to them, other than "I think they look nice, so I'll hang onto them." When I move away, he'll be missing than wheel for sure!
 
You did good Sam. I've used a 3 burner mankel for many years. I did however modify it so the door is in the end instead of the side. Love it.
 
screw those old death wheels, break it in half then take the anvils.

Bruce, I think i'll be doing the same, but adding a stack of thin brick to do so.

Ha!.... I just remembered your "reinvention of the wheel" that almost sent you to the maker... I learned from your mistake, bro.... I'd leave it a pedal power machine if I ever nabbed it.
