Hello,
I have/do own a decent amount of Maxpedition gear, and while it's great for the woods or school, my wife won't be seen near me in public with it (same with my Tilley hat :grumpy:). We go on a lot of vacations and I like to have a small bag with me when we do. I might be able to get away with a Pygmy Falcon, and that would solve my problem of what to carry, but she may hate that as well when it comes. What she says would look okay is an over-the-shoulder camera bag. Any recommendations for something non-tactical but a bit cooler than the usual tourist bag? My camera is a Sony point-and-shoot, and I'd like to be able to fit my wallet, passport, and some food in there as well.

How about National Geographics line of camera bags? Comes in alot of different sizes/styles.

I like Domke bags -- they're simple, with light padding and clean lines. I carry an F-5xc a lot. Take a look at it -- but also at the smaller F-5xa and F-5xb.

Lowepro makes great camera bags. I can't recommend a particular model for your situation; my bags are either too small or too large for what you have in mind.

Excellent quality, durable, most have rain covers, padded, appropriate pockets, and best of all it doesn't look like army gear.

It's expensive, but I AEDC (Almost Everyday Carry) a Filson Medium Field Bag. They also have a smaller one.

If you look around on the net you can find it for less than list.

Though I would love to carry one of those for the utility of it, that looks too much like a woman's bag to me (no offense to you, I'm sure you ooze more manliness than me and can pull it off just fine). Filson does make some fine items...

I've been looking at the Lowe Pro bags, and as stated above: they don't look at all like army bags. I have some of their cases already and they are very well made.

I thought about one of those, but my sister-in-law has one and it's not holding up too well. Having said that, she is hard on her stuff and tends to overload a bag.

How is yours holding up?

Mine is holding up just fine...ive had it for a couple of years now and it still looks as new. Mind you, i dont go bushwacking with it, only use it to haul my camera around the city and on trips.

I can easily fit my DSLR, extra batt, phone, wallet, keys, etc in it. I recommend it.

Not as fancy as others have mentioned, but I use a padded JanSport (approx 10x6x3 but expands) for carrying a G17 a couple of extra mags and SureFire as a travel companion in the car. It has "D" rings and hangs well with a 1inch strap. It holds a .5 liter water bottle vertical zipped close, and the outside pocket holds my Sony Cyber Shot camera. I used to buy inexpensive JanSport bags to get the logo and then re sew on my Uncle Mikes multicolored fanny packs..... regards Les

So, why not get another LowePro bag? I have 6 LowePro bags for my camera equipment, and I have never had a problem with any of 'em.

I've used a couple of Domke bags for the past 25 years. The SAME bags... They hold up that well! Carried them all over S.E. Asia as EDC. They make a lot of different sizes and styles, and most are completely customizable.

I guess they are a little too far over on the tourist bag side for me (I like to walk a fine line ;)). I really like a few, but they are heavily padded and for what I need I do not want padding. It's starting to look like I'm going to have to make this bag myself...

the pygmy falcon is pretty normal looking, as far as maxped bag products go...as long as you don't get it in camo or maybe OD, it shouldn't be an issue unless someone has a big hate on the "maxped style" to begin with..."in general", i wouldn't settle for some other brand just because someone has a prob with the look...

I just purchased a Maxpedition Fatboy in their new Dark Blue (NOT the royal blue). It's about as sheeple friendly as you can get. It literally looks like a camera bag I bought at walmart. I get serious looks when toating my OD Green Maxpedition Vulture II or OD Green Mongo Versapack. But OD is my favorite... people just associate it with military so they assume I got a damn machine gun in the thing. (Which... I don't carry any of my class III stuff LOL). Anyway, I got the dark blue fatboy and no one has given it a second look. It'll hold my phone, ipod, wallet, Glock 36, two spare mags, Leatherman, Surefire flash light, Busse Boss Street, and a stash of small Urban survival gear tucked away in the main compartment. Things like a lighter, matches, 550 cord, tritium lamp, data cables for ipod and phone, spare batts, water tabs, allen and torx bit kit, note pad and pens, ect ect. Give it a look. Their new colors really do subdue the bags greatly.
