My mom has some pigs, and she needed one castrated. The Vet came out, and said that he was too old and it would cost 500 bucks. Well, while some rednecks were over (imagine that) they helped my mom trap the pig. While telling her tale of woe, one of them said,"Shoot, 500 dollars..", and proceeded to take out (my mom's description here) "some old penknife, and just cut off his (keeping it out of W&C) and just let him go..They just held him down and cut them off..!!!"

That's what spey blades are for folks. I wasn't there, or I would tell you what kind of knife it was.

Cripes ... you would think the hog would bleed to death if they just cut em off.

My father in law uses a Queen Congress or an ancient Case Stockman to castrate young bulls. I have helped him and it's a sight to see! I didn't think that could be done so fast, but it don't take an old Mississippi boy, with experience, very long to make them a steer. All he ever uses is the sheepfoot blade or as he calls it "the nut cutter."":D

I'm just a city boy, but who was "too old," the vet or the pig?

I don't think that my bacon is gonna taste the same in the morning. Ugh!:barf: :barf: :barf:

I knew one rancher in BC who castrated rams and bulls by using his teeth to pull out the testicles :barf: -- after making a cut to open the sac. Said he never had any problem with infections (on the critters), as a result. Used the spey blade on his stockman, BTW.

I heard that alot of the sheep farmers use a knife to castrate and then grab the remaining strands that are hanging from the area just cut with their teeth!!!! They say that they are to slippery for your hands to grab...They also eat the testicles...they are called mountain oysters.

When you emasculate young pigs, you don't just grab 'em and cut 'em off. You need a couple of guys to hold the pig, one guy to weld the knife, and a guy to hold the screw worm bottle. You fork your index and middle fingers of your non-knife hand, poke the two fingers behind and under the testicles, pushing them upward, and cut a slit in the scrotum over each testicle. The pressure from the two fingers makes them pop right out through the slits. You then grab one testicle, pull it out until the connecting tube is stretched, and holding the blade perpendicular to the tube, rub it gently up and down on the tube until it separates. Repeat for the other testicle. Take the applicator swab from the screw worm medicine bottle, dab a good coating of the black, tar-like medicine inside each hole, and release the pig. There is no bleeding to speak of. They hop around a little and go about their business.

At least that's how we did it in vo-ag class at Reeltown High School. Dozens and dozens of them. If you were known to carry a truly sharp knife, you could use your own. Otherwise, the vo-ag instructor would provide you a scapel.

that story angers me. Im no animal rights activist or vegetarian by any means, but that sounds like cruelty to animals. that pig will now die of infection wont he? maybe Im just farm ignorant

yes...a few details have been left out, making it out to be more than it really is.

sheep are often castrated by simply putting a very tight rubber band aorund the top of the sack. It'll run around for a bit trying to rub it off, but eventually it'll dry up and fall off - no pain.

Animal cruelty is a state of mind, not a method. People slaughter animals all day everyday all over the world. If your mind is in the right place (either reverant or at least callused), their's nothing inhumane about it.

Just to be completely clear. Did the red neck use his knife to cut off his own (keeping it out of W&C), or did he use it to cut off the pig's (keeping it out of W&C)?

MikeH describes how our vet basically castrated our adult goat who we weren't going to breed anymore. He was given a shot of something to calm him down a little bit before we proceeded. Before we started, the vet washed things down a bit with a soap/antibacterial solution. After we were finished the vet slathered some kind of blue antibiotic all over the incisions on the scrotum . I was instructed to make sure the flies didn't get in the wounds or it could become infected. I used the same spray used for to keep flies off horses for that. This was all done in our pasture.

Daniel Koster describes how I used to do our baby male goats and a couple of sheep to boot. Just like Daniel said, they run around a little bit kicking and trying to rub it off, but they settle down after a few minutes. A few weeks later, "plop" they fall off nice and clean. It's actually preferable to surgically removing them because they aren't exposed to infection. The bands are specially made for this. They are small and thick, you use a special pair of spreaders to stretch the band large enough to slip it over the testicals. Not a bad setup, I did it by myself with no problems.

Now, I did ask the vet if I could simply do the rubber band thing with my older male goat. He said it wasn't advisable because (obviously) things are much more developed in an adult than the little ones. He said for the adults, surgical castration was the better method.

Ohh shoot,,sorry you said "by"...
I thought you said to..

My mistake..:)

Eric...

Yeah, the pig will die of infection. That's why farmers have done this to millions of animals upon which their livlihood depends.

I grew up in North Alabama and we did it pretty much like MikeH did. I used a Case XX 11031 sheepfoot blade and de-balled hundreds of hogs. Nothing inhumane or cruel to speak of. Kind of like giving your child a shot...sticking needles in little children sounds cruel and inhumane does'nt it? Some things just have to be done. I still have that case xx, it's a cherished bit of my growing up...and it's the first knife I ever bought with my own money. Ah the memories...buy a knife, de-ball a hog....good times...:D

Oh yea..MikeH...ROLL TIDE!!!!
