Manly men

I don't think that my bacon is gonna taste the same in the morning. Ugh!:barf: :barf: :barf:
You castrate the pig so the bacon WILL BE more edible.

Mike H got it right. Castrated my first (and only) pig in vo-ag class in much the same manner.

Dijos, I think the rednecks just saved your mom some cash. As long as the wound doesn't get infected, the pig'll be fine.

As for getting angry over this act, get a grip. Think about it next time you're having a nice bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit. That bacon came from a pig that was (possibly) castrated and slaughtered.

Need a link on pig castration? Well, here ya' go: http://www.aces.uiuc.edu/archives/experts/swine/0249.html

This thread kind of reminds me of the british Rugby fan who bragged in front of his buddys in the local pub, he would cut his ball off if Britain lost to Wales. Well Britain got hammered and Wales won their first home game in, what, 12 years or so.....Yup, he did it went home, cut them off and walked back to the pub holding them in his hands....

Since he is now in critical condition in the hospital, I would assume that there is some skill to how you should be doing that type of surgery.....

I've caught and held thousands of young pigs to have them castrated. Our pigs didn't even get anything put on the cuts afterwards, cut, given a vacination at the same time and released. They weren't happy about it, but I don't recall one ever getting an infection or dying from this procedure.

However, the older the pigs get there is a possibility of more complications.

:D:D

Just to clarify:
The pig was too old. Not the vet. Unfortunately, he was having sex with everything (goats, sheep) that he could attempt.

the procedure was pretty much as mikeh described it.

The pig is currently fine, though less amorous.

They did save about 500 bucks.

I love bacon.

Don't worry, farmers have been doing that for God knows how long.

I remember in my "Animal Science" Class back in '76 our female teacher did the spey blade / teeth thing on a piglet, right in the classroom. Then we went out in the parking lot where there was a big propane furnace, some irons and some livestock. We docked lamb tails with the red hot irons, emasculated calves with Burdizo emasculators, and applied the rubber bands on others with that rubber band tool.

Can you imagine if that happened in SF, LA or NY these days? We would have all gone to jail. :D

Yep, the life of a farm animal can seem pretty brtual to the uninitiated. But this type of stuff has been going on a long, long time. Like MikeH elluded to, people who's livelihood depends on their animals are not in the habit of causing their deaths prematurely. They are also not in the habit of spending money on vets at every turn, it's just not affordable or even practical. So, they do as much of this stuff as they can and have been forever.

Since I only had one adult goat to castrate and had never done it, the money for the vet was no big deal. I think it cost $125.00 total, and that's with him coming out to do it. Not sure why it would be $500.00 for a pig.

Treatment of livestock may seem harsh, and maybe it is compared to what most people are used to. What you don't want to do is apply human emotions to animals. Now, this is not to say they should be mistreated or abused in any manner. What that pig experienced was somewhat painful yes. But any emotional trauma such as a human being would experience, no.

I've done the rubber band thing..to CATS! :D how this went is we have barn cats and the cost of doing the male AND females was a bit ex$pen$ive,so on talking to some 'ol farmers around here I decided a male cat can be done with a rubber band whilst the females would be left to a vet.

Now one thing you ought to know-holding down a pissed offed 20lb male cat and putting a rubber band to his nuts is a thing that will make hunting the nastyest animal seem like fun! :D

A real manly man doesn't just perform castrations on pigs, he performs his own vasectomy.

Guess you could always perfrom a Burdizzo castration like they regularly do on cattle, where you crush (with a special plier-like tool near the base of the scrotum above the testicles) the spermatic cord carrying blood to the testicles essentially killing the testicles but without making any incisions. Gotta crush several times in somewhat specific locations for this to work though. If you do it wrong you'll kill the entire scrotum, not just the testicles. So, pay attention to what your doing.

that story angers me. Im no animal rights activist or vegetarian by any means, but that sounds like cruelty to animals. that pig will now die of infection wont he? maybe Im just farm ignorant

Let's get a grip shall we? My cousin is just talking to my Dad right now (he has a 500 acre dairy farm) what he uses to castrate young bulls and he replied. " a pocketknife". They also use something called an 'emasculator' which is sort of like a large pair of end clippers. The rubber bands are used more and more. Especially after he PO'ed his wife and she threatened him with the 'emasculator'. LOL

Did you really think all that meat in the store came from animals that comitted sucicide? LOL

Rob

Ok - enough. I made it clear in my post that I don't have an issue with killing animals for food. Lets not play attack the city-boy tree hugger cuz thats not the situation here. According to the article that guyon provided, this castration was not exactly "by the book". I realize that Im probably just under-exposed to this sort of reality - but jeez it sounded so BRUTAL that I got a little jumpy. we can move on now.
