My buddy is gushing over a Mantis knife he bought--I've never seen it--he lives in another town.

What's the general opinion of these?

the general opinion is not a good one.

there are a few members whom i respect that say they produce a decent product for the money spent.

i am not a particular fan of the "good for the money" mentality. i do own knives that seem like they could conceivable cost quite a bit more, there are several spyderco products that come to mind. so in that respect, i can see the argument as valid.

but if money is a considerable factor, i think you (or anyone) can do much better at the same price points offered by mantis.

nope. There is a line of knives called Mantis Knives. The owner organized a spamming of BF, which reinforced the low opinion of the product that had already been formed. There were some early misleading ads by Mantis purporting the knives to be made in the US and to be of uber blade alloys. They are made in China of run of the mill alloys.

I asked about their fillet knife and got slapped back into reality by a number of members here. :p

i think his introduction (on his logo page? not going to bother posting it so google it.) speaks for itself

"If you're carrying a Mantis Knife, it would be a rare occasion to see another Mantis Knife peeking out of a strangers pocket. The hand-built nature of our knives dictate the limited production and thereby, the exclusivity."

such loaded phrases as "the hand-built nature and the fact that i could think of a zillion different knife companies that i would be carrying exclusively from everyone else in my town. seams a bit too gimicky. bang for your buck, i say "there was just noo way."

It would probably be worth while driving to that town to point and laugh at your friend.

There are many better knives for the money made by people who don't set up
spam campaigns or feel they have to glorify their products with misleading adds.

From their "Chaos 2" knife:
"The second in our series of Chaos models, this tool is constructed of ¼” thick laser cut 154CM stainless. I’ve personally seen a SWAT team member use it as a step ladder as he stabbed it sideways into a power pole, then launched himself over a fence. It was amazing, but not unbelievable. As with all Chaos models, the blocks of G-10 are secured directly into the tang with 440 stainless screws. It doesn’t get any wilder than this one."

They're junk. Try not to laugh too hard at your friend.

Omaha, you have been here long enough to know that you don't use the 'M' word in polite company. ;)

O-bg,
Have you heard enough yet?!

I'd rather use the forearms of a mantis to cut with.

I mean the little green bugs.

At least they don't spam BF.

Mantis seems to have expanded it's line from last time I looked at their site. (long time ago) Now they have the most pricey models with claimed 154CM steel.
I remember they had one before with claimed BG42 and a member here tried it out and felt it was far from actual BG42. One model weighs in now at a whopping 9 ounces!

It's pretty hard for me to even believe a person could manage to "stab" this model "into a power pole" far enough manage to hold his weight as he bore down with force and "then launched himself over a fence". Even if the knife could hold up to the strain. Power poles are very hard and it would require a lot of strength (maybe even a hammer)and a sharper point to get a knife in that far, IMO. (just noticed they call the tanto point a "plow point"):D I have no idea how sideways would even be possible?" Unless he just means the knife its self is facing the person sideways.
