When I was in South East Asia in the early sixties there was a spider (big sucker) that routinely caught small birds in its web and ate them. It was an, uh, interesting experience to be walking down a trail in the semi-dark and have one of those webs wrap around your face. They were strong. It still makes me shudder to think about it.

I'd say it is possible, but it would have to be a large mantis like that one and a small bird, like the hummingbird.

I'm much more used to seeing them go after flies and such.

Neat pic! Catching it is one thing, being strong enough to pull it up w/o falling off the branch is another...;)

There is probably a second photo of some varmints/snakes on the ground looking up going, "Oh man...jackpot...maybe...". :D

That's awesome!! I saw a nature special not to long ago where a preyin mantis devoured a hatchling pit viper

Dang that Bird Eating Spider was Wicked too. YOU KNOW its coming but its still gives you a bit of a jump when it nailed that mouse. I saw a mantis eat a mouse in a vid. Pretty cool too. Gotta suck for the critter being eaten by a mantis as it doesnt even have any venom.....its just eaten alive.
