Having only about $70 to spend on a knife, i am considering a Mantis Chaos 1 or a Muela Mirage. Which of these (Or another?) would you recommend, I am planning to use this knife as a Combat Knife while I'm in the Marines.

Not familiar with those specific knives.
I've had a couple of Muelas in the past and I was very pleased with them. Good values, for sure.

I'd say 'other':

The Muelas are generally good, depending on which one you get. I have no experience with the one you mention.

There are lots of other knives out there for $70. or less, like the Kabar Becker BK7. If you look in the For Sale forum, you'll probably find any number of fixed blades that'll come up, in your size & price range. Others here will chime in with good recommendations as well.

(Ha! bld522 beat me to it!)

Good luck in the Corps.

I had my Muelas about 20ish years ago and they seemed great, though I didn't have a clue.
I'm curious what I'd think of 'em today.
Anybody here NOT like Muelas?

The BK-7 will chop the Muela in half. If you're going to bet your life on a knife for under $70.00, get the Becker. Believe me, I'd give the same advice to my son! And thanks for your service.

First off, the Mantis Chaos is a solid knife from everything I'd read about it. (EDIT) I thought you were referring to the Chaos folder. (EDIT) I like their new Seymor(sp?) neck knives, but wish they'd use better steel than 420.

Secondly, I wouldn't bring any knife into boot camp. If you're already deployed, then that's another thing. I would go with a small f/b instead.

(1) What do you mean by "combat"? Do you believe you are going to have some knife battles while in the Marines? Last I heard...they gave people guns for that. Spend the money on a multitool like a Leatherman. Its something you will actually use.

(2) You are really considering this Mantis Chaos?!?!

Its scifi tacti-mall-ninja-silly. You will get laughed out of the Marines with that thing. Yes, I suppose you could stab somebody with it. But that's about it.

(3) Let's say in some improbably crazy scenario....while in the Marines, your life depends on your "combat" knife.

You are only willing to spend 70 bucks on it?!? Would you take the cheapest, crappiest gun they have? ("Give me the one that jams a lot and has no stopping power!") Heck, I value my like at at least a hundred, a hundred twenty-five bucks.

If you want a Muela combat knife go for the Hornet, Storm, or Typhoon.
Since you're looking at Spanish knives you might like the Cudeman MT-1/MT-2, or the Nieto Warfare.

to be honest, I would stay away from mantis knives.

I can't really make a suggestion though, without knowing what tasks you intend to use the knife for. Also, are you already enlisted and with a unit, or are you planning to enlist/have yet to go through basic?

and to marcinek, there are still times when soldiers must use their knives in hand to hand combat. Sure soldiers get weapons, but sometimes you are too close to use them ('course then they would be too close for you to draw a knife, but thats another story), sometimes they run out of ammo, sometimes they jam, etc....

Yep. Ka-Bar Becker BK-7. $62.00 at Amazon with free shipping.

For the listed budget, I was going to suggest a BK-7 as well.
Big enough and tough enough to do what may need doing, but not so stupidly huge that one wouldn't carry it.

Combat knife is not a fighting knife. Its a cool word for a heavy-duty all purpose knife.

Ah! Like XTreme Gov Ops Spec Dark Mil Tac Combat.

Got it!

Of course, that is what you think "combat" means....not what the OP think it means, is it?

True. And that's exactly why I included point (3) in my earlier post.

Yes. I have the serialized first run with the limited edition tiger stripe ceramic teflon titanium coating.

I used it just yesterday when I was commisioned to carve a 20' granite statue of Don Cheadle.

Tyronethepro,
If the Marines are anything like the Army you won't be allowed your own knife or any knife for that matter till you are out of basic at which point you'll have enough money to get a good blade. They even had us snap the nail files out of our nail clippers. Drop the word among friends and relatives and maybe they'll hook you up with really nice blade when you graduate Boot.
