I recently shifted my focus towards flippers. I have bought and sold several now, and have a better idea of what I'm looking for in one. However, I am not that familiar with all the options that are out there. If you guys could give me some suggestions based on my preferences I would appreciate it. Right now I'm looking for a Kizer Gemini as it seems to fit what I'm going after, but would love to have more choices.

1. manual, bearing fast smooth action- ( I had a reate hills, loved the action, but knife a bit big for me).
2. edc, thiner profile on the scales/handles. (love the width (up/down) of the handles of my zt 0770cf, not chunky in the pocket at all)
3. $200 max price-point
4. closed handle size between 4" and 4.5".

Thanks for any suggestions you might have,
Adam

I'very got some other priorities first, but once they're taken care of I plan on getting a ZT 0808.

Kershaw Chill. Smooth action, hones razor sharp, thin profile. Great knife.

Kizer is a really good place to look in that price category, along with ZT's newer smaller offering like others have suggested.

I'm extremely partial to the Spyderco Southard flipper - it's one of the few knives 3.5 blades I can carry and still get my whole hand in my pocket.

Kizer Gemini, ZT 0450 and Spyderco Southard are my current favorites based on the OP's specs. They're all terrific knives.

I've been carrying the ZT0801 for a little while now and really like it. It fits you parameters. I barely notice it in my pocket which is a good thing to me. The action is very smooth and is the best of my 3 ZTs (350, 560, 801). One disclaimer though I did replace my ZT 0560 with the 0801 so maybe that's why it feels as small as it does.

I really liked my zt 0900. It flipped better then my 562 cf and my xm18. It is a smaller knife tho

All black Southard.....super sexy and flips beautifully!!! Real unique blade also.
ZT 450.......amazing flipper and too cool for school!
Spydie Domino blue twill. I become a total flipping fool when I carry it!! Great steel!!
Good luck......or just do like the rest of us and get them all!!

I just ordered a Stedemon, should be here today. I'll report back.

welp, its here... its a big knife and a very nice flipper. It is 125mm closed, about 5" so not quite in your spec of under 4.5". I dont like that the scales are heavily textured under the clip as it has already pulled a chunk from my worn jeans pocket. The edge quality and tollerances look fairly percise which is fantastic for a <$150 knife. Despite its large blade, its very well balanced to its handle - perhaps the flat design is helping keep the weight down on the VG10 steel.

I took a shot with some other EDC folders. The 3" XM18 Hinderer is the shortest closed at 4". The Benchmade Stryker Elishewitz is the smallest in size but 4.25" closed. The Stedemon DSG is the largest by both measurements.

If anyones interested I tried to take some photos and upload them to my flickr:

It's not thin but I like the Benchmade 300-1.

Mine is very smooth and it's 4.1 inches closed.

ZT0801 or 0562 - if the flipper aspect of the knife is the most important part then the action on the 0801 is amazing ... not the 0562 is a slouch. The 0801 is also a very interesting design the blackwash in particular JMHO.

Sounds like you're sticking with the smaller ones.

  • Zero Tolerance 0900, 0450, 0808
  • Spyderco Positron (out any day now), Domino
  • CRKT Eros Titanium 3"
  • Hogue EX-02 flipper
  • Kizer Gemini (you had already mentioned it - great choice)
  • Brous Bionic 2.0
  • LionSteel TRE G-10
