Does anyonme know of an accurate, manual oven thermometer suitable for a toaster oven. Want to test mine for tempering. Would be nice if within a couple % or 10 degrees. Brand name or outlet would be great. Thanks
i would suggest you get a PID and a type K Thermocouple. The PID will be connected to the thermocouple and you drill a small hole and insert the thermocouple and it will read the oven's temperature extremely accurately. Add an SSR and then the PID can control the temperature and cycle the oven on and off to maintain the temperature very precisely.
Read this post and it will explain everything and where to get stuff.
With the PID and Type K Thermocouple only, you end up with something like this (which only reads the oven temperature and does not control it) Excuse the horrible photo
John,
I recently came across a model/brand called "Temprite" by Taylor. It reads from 100 to 600 degrees F, and has a large, 3.25" face, so I can read it without getting my face scorched.www.taylorusa.com
I got it at my local supermarket.

Buy two oven thermometers from WalMart, Target, local grocery store, etc.. Put both in your toaster oven, set temp at 300 degrees F, turn on. See if both are 'close', ramp up by 50 degrees, then another 50 degrees and so on. If there is a major discrepancy between the two, buy a third and repeat the test and discard the odd one or sell it at a garage sale. Are they accurate? Don't know. As long as they are 'close' to each other then the temp is the 'average' of the two and may actually be pretty close. In my case, the toaster oven is 'high' by about 35-40 degrees. Make a conversion chart for your oven for ready reference. The only caveat is to get the upright type of oven thermometer and make sure there is enough room in the toaster oven for it to standup (its easier to read the face that way).
