i have about 0lbs of maple burl that is now dry enough to send in for stabilization. I'm going to be using WSSI. I'm getting some done in just the clear, but was wondering what other colors.....single or double dyed....that would be good to have done. I know that some of it is just what you like, but was wondering what colors or combinations might have better success.

thanks

My comments involve 1911 pistol grips instead of knives so keep that in mind in judging my comments. In maple, I have only tried single dyes. I have found good sales in blue and green. I have had sales in red, but I don't know who treated the red and it was a bit more pink than I would like. I have had success with turquoise sales, too. Something else I have done myself and that was using bleach to whiten different woods (like myrtle). I have done two tone this way highlighting raised carvings. Very effective and the ivory or bone look with wood grain or burl or feather or fiddle has been a good seller.

I would give you another suggestion. Knife & Gun Finishing Supplies in Arizona and Gallery Hardwoods in Eugene, Or. have a better stabilization process (in my experience) than the outfit you suggested. They charge the same price.

Good luck in your endeavors

Maple should be single dyed.
I get good results and sales with Tan, Brown, Green, Blue, and occasionally Black.

It completely depends on what the maple burl looks like now. Mike (I hope I remember that name correctly) at WSSI is a wealth of information. I trusted his judgment on dying some of my maple burl and am glad I did. Turned out beautiful.

thanks guys. Messed up the poundage in my first post. I have about 20lbs that i"m sending in. I think that I will go ahead and try two or three single colors. Most of it has some really nice figure to it. I've got a stock of some nice spalted maple I'm saving up to send in also. Hoping I can save myself some money on wood. I appriciate all the good feed back.

Last time I sent some curly maple to WSSI, I told them to break it up and give me some of every color they had.
I got back, green, purple, black, tan and clear.
I actually like them all, and glad now I got some of every color now.

what did the poor maple burls do to you. What ever it is I am sure they don't deserve to be punished that bad.... maple is best in her glorious natural beauty.
