I'm late to the party, but was very happy to receive my completed CPM-M4 Mule this week. The work was done by Erwin Roach, a Mississippi knifemaker who does some very nice work. He maintains a website at http://www.angelfire.com/extreme4/e3knives/

Erwin took the scales from a quilted maple block that I purchased several years ago from Texas Knifemaker's Supply and I've been looking for the right opportunity to use it. The wood has alot of depth, which I believe is formally called "chatoyancy". The attention to detail from Erwin is pretty amazing and I really appreciate the work at the rear of the handle/lanyard hole. The sheath is a nice touch.

Very, very nice work on both the handle and the sheath!

Nicely done. Gorgeous figure on that Maple.

Great clocking on the pins too.

That's what I was going to say...love the heads on those pins. Did he make the sheath, also? Great work all around. I might have to look into getting a Mule at some point, especially if it can be made to look as sweet as that.

Thanks for the kind words. I'm a big fan of traditional, wood handled hunting knives so this was the kind of package I wanted.

What really got me excited about this Mule was the steel. I've always liked M-2 blades and when I heard that CPM-M4 was kind of like M-2 on steroids, I figured it would be a winner. I also like D-2 and I think Tom Krein at some point said that CPM-M4 should have about 6 times the wear resistance as D-2. Not sure if that's accurate, but I bet this blade be able to skin more than a few animals without the need to resharpen.

I anxiously await the new Mule.

That is beautiful.. An art piece I should say. Will you be using her or will she be a display piece? Can't imagine putting that to use, way too beautiful for me.

I'll use it. I once kept many safe queens but at some point realized that I get the most enjoyment from using knives. Plus, the Mule project is intended to solicit feedback for the various blade steels. However, my only concern with this type of knife is that I won't have enough opportunities to use it in the field to give it an adequate test run. I'll try though :D

Thanks for the comments of encouragement all. That had to be one of the nicest blocks of maple I ever cut into.
Slatts,, Damn I wish I could take pic's that good:eek:

Very Nice !!!!!

What is the deal with the 135V marking on the blade though ?? It is by the "spyder" logo.

Mine doesn't have that & some of the pictures of others do not either. ;)

No big deal...... just curious. :)

Spyderco Collectors Club number, and since this is MT2, the V is added to denote a Variation of a previously released model.

Hey e3ck, glad you could visit. The maple is good, but someone had to make it work! I'm enjoying the sheath. I wore it around the house over the weekend to the amusement of some family members.

I'm also really enjoying the M5 Skinner you made as well. The finish on the walnut is amazing. You'll have to tell me how you did that sometime. I'll post some pics of it when I get a chance.
