How good or bad are the Marbles Classic line of knives?I'm looking for traditional American woodsman knives and gear, thanks.

I picked up the 4" Ideal not long ago,it's a well made knife, convex ground edge extremely sharp out of the box
and still made in the USA

Codger might be along shortly.

Hoooo, meeee?

I really can't say as to the quality of the newer Marbles knives. I do have several of the originals and I can say that, IMHO, a knife that was made in 1915 and still is in good shape in 2007 speaks volumes to me about durability. That there is still a demand for the patterns after nearly a hundred years speaks well of the designs as well.

The newer ones are made of (?) steel, old ones were 1095HC. They were good enough (and popular enough) in their heyday (1907-1930) that every knife maker both here and abroad copied and adapted the designs. I have three or four different manufacturer's copies (Remington, Jean Case, Schrade, Western) of the original Woodcraft. All are good users. I also have the original Marbles Woodcraft (1915 patent pending) and cannot tell much difference in the utility of any of them. All of mine are leather handled.

If you want a new one, they are easy enough to find. Same for an old original. Be prepared to spend some bucks for an original in stag, or with stag pommel though.

Really, I don't see how you could get much more traditional unless you go with the earlier wood handled Russell skinner, a glorified butcher knife.
