March Challenge Discussion Thread

Okay, got some questions. What about things like glue? Is it kosher to use some wood glue, rather than hunting down an animal and boiling down its hooves for glue and such? I'm assuming sandpaper and files etc are out, so I'll have to use a broken rock for a rasp or something to shape a bowstave? We need to use paracord or some such for the bowstring?

Basically, I'm wondering--hand tools allowed, or JUST a Becker knife? Are we going for neolithic or closer to medieval here?

Primitive weapons are primitive. Cavemen didn't have sandpaper and epoxy, they had sharpened rocks, and sticks. :D

Material list is as follows, 1 BKT knife, paracord/synthetic cord/natural cord, you mitts, and your noggin'. What can you do with just those at your disposal?

Alrighty, thanks for the clarification. Caveman weapons it is!

Its about knowledge, and resoucefulness. About working with what ya got, and if you can do a good job with nothing, imagine what you can do when you DO actually have something to work with.

Oh, and just FYI, there was sanding and gluing long before we got sandpaper and sytheticj adhesives. You can sand something with, um, er, a handful of sand. You can use leather to bind something, be' sure and wet it thoroughly first, and when it dries, it will contract and hold better than epoxy. Just some ideas.

If I wasn't in the middle of moving I'd be all over this one.

I've made a couple bows in my day

Even twisted the sting myself.

Good luck guys!!!

this is right up my alley! it aint gonna be purdy...but I know I can make some killin-tools!

Gotta ''test'' them eh?
I wonder if the pound will ask questions if I ''adopt'' a couple dogs?

(im joking im joking)

(maybe)

slings and strings and bows and arrows

boomerangs as pictured aren't great weapons, they return :> the NON returning kind though, aerodynamic killing machines :>

there's a lot of books on this stuff. readup. good times.

I got a pretty good idea for a spear, I'm gonna use the BK-17 that I get from the passaround for it.

Oh great idea man. I might do the same thing actually if it gets here in time.

I'm like 90% sure I'll have no chance at either doing this, or winning this, but it sounds pretty fun.

In other news, I really need to order some Paracord.

One weapon down, two to go.

Which leads me to a question, Moose.

We don't have to use the same knife for all three weapons do we? For example, if I made one weapon today with my BK14, could I make my second weapon next week with the BK17 I just ordered?:)

I would assume one knife total not per weapon however seeing as how my 16 is getting here tomorrow but I already used my 9 to chop a log down could one use one knife per weapon?

I was under the impression that it was one knife total. I guess I can see how that could be a problem for others who have a lot of Becker users... My BK2 is my main user right now and she is what I am using for these primitive guys. Her heftiness is getting to me though!

I am pretty pumped for this challenge, I think it is the firs one I am actually going to have the time to do. I was watching Less stroud in some show on netflix and he was using this really primitive weapon that i am going to try and make. We will see how it actually comes out :)

Went out and tried to make it happen today but all I could find was dry dead wood that I couldn't work with. I live in a very arid region. I'm gonna have to buy fresh wood to work with to get this done hah.
