Hi everyone.
It's that time of year and I am pleased to bring you this year's collabartive March of Dimes "Blades For Babies" project.
In case you missed it, you can see this project come together here:
EDIT: This raffle is CLOSED! Thanks for your consideration!!!!

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=699034

We have a really fantastic group of artists once again this year that did a fantastic job in bringing this project together!
ABS Journeyman Kyle Royer made a really fantastic multibar damascus blade, and ABS Mastersmith Burt Foster worked his magic with the walrus ivory handle and 416 stainless steel guard.
The project was the passed on to the talented hands of Joe Mason. Joe engraved the guard and did a little gold inlay, and his work really enhanced what was already a very nice knife.
From there it went to the shop of Chris Kraffits of Treestump Leather for one of his spectacular rattlesnake inlayed sheaths.
The display stand was made by myself and Layla, and is made from Oregon redwood burl with mammoth ivory knife props and an oval mammoth ivory inset scrimmed by Josh Dabney.
The stand is finished with several coats of Tru Oil and green felt on the bottom.
Don Fields of Don Fields Ivory generously donated the walrus ivory used for the handle of this knife, and Mark Farley of Burl Source donated the redwood slab used for the display stand.
Once again Jim Cooper was our photographer, and he provide us with not 1 but 4 fantastic images for your viewing pleasure!
All of these talented artists and generous people have done a spectacular job and Layla and I can't thank you enough for your participation!
If you would like to participate in this fundraising effort we will be selling chances, and we will be doing this a little different this year. There will be 400 chances available and the more you buy, the more you will get.
1 chance is 15.00, 4 chances is 50.00, 10 chances is 100.00,25 is 250.00, 60 is 500.00, and 140 chances is 1000.00 dollars, so dig deep and help a great cause, and just maybe you could walk away with a very special package!
The drawing will be April 15th and all donations should be in no later than 12 noon of that day. The winner will be notified by email.I am now accepting payments via PayPal for this effort. Charity raffles are okay with PayPal, as I had to clear all of this up with them last year.
Just mention March of Dimes Charity Raffle and everything should be okay. My PayPal address is jhncohea@hotmail.com
For anyone wanting to mail in donations my address is:

What a beautiful knife and a great collaboration.
Absolutely fantastic damascus. It's mesmerizing.

Fantastic knife! Congratulations and thanks to all involved in this worthy project. Paypal has been sent.

Love the whole package John. Especially the sheath and the way the strap and snap resemble a "Heart"! The Burl display and inlay are a perfect compliment to this outstanding collaboration.

Thanks everyone! I must annouce that there has been a new development in this effort. ALL 400 chances have now been sold!!!!!Roger spoke for the first 10 and the remainder have since been purchased by another generous person!!!I can no longer accept money for any more chances, and any monies recieved after this post will be refunded.Since this is a drawing between two people, I will move the drawing up to April 9th, which will be the day after I get home. Good luck to you both and thanks to all who participated!!!

This is a beautiful knife and a great cause. All of the participants should be very proud of their efforts.

Congratulations on selling all of your chances so quickly in less than 9 1/2 hours.

I, like alot of others would have liked to take a chance on this knife rather than one individual buying 97.5% of the chances which pretty much decides who will be the winner.

It's a great cause and good luck to those with chances. I was looking forward to having a shot at this one also.

It's really hard to do anything but laud such a charitable enterprise. But we all have opinions. My own opinion is that the lack of a rule to prevent this from happening will just cause contributions to drop in subsequent years - and that hurts the charity.

In a charity raffle such as this, it's tough to balance ticket price, ticket volume and bulk purchases. The ultimate goal is to raise money for charity and I am happy for the organizers - and for the charity - that all tickets sold and sold quickly.

That said, for a project that is both the product of, and promoted within the knife community, it would have been nice to see more members of the community given an opportunity to participate. One doesn't want to discourage bulk ticket sales - getting tickets sold is rather the point - but going forward, perhaps consideration should be given to limiting bulk purhcases to a given amount for any single buyer. That way a raffle remains a raffle and does not become an outright purchase.

Again - I applaud all involved for their efforts. Obviously the total package of knife sheath and stand was a very appealing draw.

Roger

dang, that was fast!

I'm surprised there wasn't a limit for the number of tickets, but you guys worked hard and it's nice that you got a big wad of cash right away which can start doing its work for the March of Dimes immediately.

I wanted a chance at winning this beautiful knife/sheath as much as anyone, however the larger purpose (though not the only purpose) of a project like this is to raise THE MOST $$$$ FOR THE CHARITY, not to give the most folks a chance to win.

Both the project team's process selection and the individual who put the big bucks down insured that this year's final contribution will be far greater than those in the past. That's the bottom line.
And remember, even after donating the majority of the money, our 98% participant still may not win, however he/she has certainly done a grand deed.

I don't believe the outcome of this year's March of Dimes event will have any affect on next year's as every chartable project and every benefit knife has different circumstances associated with it thus a different rule set.

Again, Bravo to all involved.

I failed miserably in stating my FULL opinion here. I think everyone who had a hand in this great effort should, hands down, be congratulated. I laud your efforts. I had a really difficult time trying to say what I intended to in the above remarks and did so, rather poorly.

What was in my mind at the time was a very big, net positive. What came out in my remarks was, unfortunately, not.

Congrats to all involved!

Thanks for all the positive comments all, it is appreciated!
I was'nt expecting this to end as quickly as it has, and considered not allowing it to take place as it has, but the end goal was to raise as much money as possible.I will submit a matching funds request to the company I work for as I did last year, so that puts us at almost 6000.00 for the charity:thumbup::thumbup:, which is a substantial amount! Was I wrong in letting this take place as it has? I don't believe I was,as the old saying about a bird in the hand comes to mind, so I hope there will be no hard feelings on anyone's part.I probably should have limited the amount of chances a single person can purchase, and will consider that in the future efforts, but really didn't consider that this would happen.

John, I used to work for a company who did the matching funds routine and had forgotten there would still be companies around doing the same thing. That's an incredibly easy way to insure big bucks for the charity, way to go!

That's excellent.

Given that you didn't have a limitation in place beforehand, I don't think you could have done otherwise. And I hear you about the bird in the hand - I really do. I was thinking that this likely took you by surprise and I hope you didn't take my comment as criticism - just food for thought the next time around. What you've all done here is an overwhelmingly GOOD thing.

Thanks everyone! I just want you all to know that no posts or comments have been taken out of context, and with no ill will. I know that everyone is happy that the March of Dimes will immediatly get such a large contributioin, and there will be a different approach next year:o!!

What hurts is I was sending funds while John was posting that it was sold out...I come back 4 hours later to the news...
