Marine Combat Knife

I am a bit confused. Everywhere I've looked on the forum, the general consensus seems to be that 420 is crap and 1095 is decent. Additionally the Camillus marine combat is generally preferred as both an original and tougher version as opposed to the Kabar (don't hear much about the Onatario version).

My understanding is that the Camillus Marine combat is 420HC (their website says "high carbon blade". If that is so, why is it so accepted that the Kabar or Ontario (both 1095) don't stand up as well. I think Ontario also claims that their knife is original spec as well. So which is original, 1095 or 420HC?

Just because it says high carbon doesn't necessarily mean it's 420. It's 1095 just like the Kabar. Boy this thread brought back memories;) .

Equipped with a razor sharp 420 stainless steel blade with ergonomically designed serrations. The rubberized handle will allow for a superb grip with no worries of slipping. The military style impact resistant sheath is designed to hold the knife securely, but offers easy and quick access. (12" ov, 7 1/4" bl)

LMAO! I just love reading those "budget" knock off knife companies advertising! They know absolutely nothing about knives. Like the "ergonomically" designed serrations.:D Is that so you can hold on to them more comfortably? And the razor sharp 420 J2 steel that isn't even ground until the bevels meet. I used to think that they were credible for selling their knives so cheap until I found out the wholesale price for their knives is something like $.80 and they sell them for $8.00. They also rip you off on their occasional brand name knife they sell at MSRP. You really save no money at all.

The Camillus marine/combat blades are 1095, not 420. That si why you are mistaken!
Hmm, I see that others posted at the same time I did! Right on guys :)

calyth, I disagree on your "Kabar is Milspec plus". I think something is either milspec or not. Kabar is not. Camillus is. I'm familiar with both. I kept my Camillus.

KA-BAR is WW2 mil-spec. Camillus is current mil-spec. Ontario was mil-spec some where in between. Out of the three companies I like the KA-BAR USMC Fighting/Utility #1217 the best.

It's like comparing the Winchester and the Marlin levergun 30-30's. Not a dime's worth of real difference between them but some folks like one, some folks like the other. Make your choice and moove on.

Ka-Bar and Camillus both use 1095. The difference is in the heat treat.I think Camillus version is better.

I don't want to drag this out but One Stop knife Shop advertises the Camillus as 420HC and the Camillus website advertises their blade as high carbon not 1095 as Ontario and Kabar specifically do. So is OSKS got their advertising wrong and does Camillus prefer to use the term high carbon instead of 1095? Does anybody have any specific info on the matter, i.e. checked with Camillus?

Lets put this post to bed. Ontario, not Camillus or KA-BAR, is the current supplier to the United States military. Their knife is mil spec. Call up Ontario to verify that if it pleases you. As for what knife is better, they are all about the same. Buy whatever pleases you.

Hey guyz, I have a KABAR for history reasons. Awesome knife with history!

Now the new history is that the Marine Corps will be using a Fighting / Bayonet knife combo design.

It is to replace the M7/M9 bayonet and KABAR style fighting knife. It looks pretty cool haven't seen one in person but will soon.

I’ve got a Case version of the Marine Combat Knife!
Can anybody tell something about this knife?
Thanks

Folks,
The Camillus MK2 Marine Combat knife, model #5684, is current mil-spec. The blade is 1095 carbon steel. Ontario knife company has the current contract, and we are a supplimental supplier. Over the years, we have supplied more Marine Combat knives to the US Military than any other supplier. We are the company that made the final design improvements in the earlier MK1 knife to transform it into the MK2 that has become famous.

yttcs, thanks for bringing to my attention the misleading wording on our website. I will have it addressed ASAP.

Thanks for your interest!

Is there any major differences between the Camillus and Ontario Marine Combat Knife? Quality, grind etc..? Thanks..

Cheers.

This thread here addresses some of the questions raised in this thread. Answered by Mr. Fennel himself, who does show up in the Camillus forum once in a while.;)

The fact that a company holds the current military contract means nothing to me, other than they quoted Uncle Sugar a lower price for their stuff when the contract came up. My time in the military showed me just how little a government contract meant in terms of quality. Not to say that Ontario, Ka-Bar, and Camillus each in their own right don't make a hell of a knife, cuz they do. Just don't let a supply contract be the deciding factor for you.

Grab ahold of all three and take home the one you like best. You won't lose. Me, I like the Camillus version the best. Your mileage may vary.

I'd like to add something to this, to paraphrase Bush 43:

I KNOW God is real and I KNOW that I love my wife.

And.......

I think they are both great knives and IF used properly and MAINTAINED, will last you a lifetime. My Kabar has been faithful since 1988 as I have taken care of her. My Dad's Camillus has served him quite well since 1971.

If you need a PRYBAR, but a Stanley 12" Bar at your local Ace for 10 bux, you'll have trouble killing it.

I love these debates over hunks of metal as only a knifeknut can !!

I've seen ads for white-handled KA-BAR's, but I am not sure if it's really white. Isn't this some type of limited edition with a handle of bone or something, commemorative?? The handles might also appear white if it's a B&W picture, if it's a wooden handle.
