Marine Combat Knife?

It sounds like Camillus has suffered a drop in quality recently. People who have older ones like them.

(So I like digging up old threads rather than starting new ones...)

Current production models of the Ka-Bar USMC Fighting Knife model #1217 (the 7" blade/leather washer handle model) have a sintered/powdered metal pommel. Don't know how new a development this is. Has anyone ever tried replacing it with a good old steel part? Can you get the part(s) to do it?

Thanks,

I have an Ontario Spec Plus Marine Bowie. Good knife. The handle is one of my favorites for a fixed blade, it sharpens very easy and seems to hold an edge pretty long. I hear their QC is a little rough though, but mine seems to be fine. Excellent sheath to boot. 30$.

Another question: For care & maintenance of the (leather) handle, would it be better to use a leather preservative like Lexol, or do as a previous poster did and seal it with linseed oil? I can see positives in either approach.

My KaBar is about 24 years old now, every three or four years I rub in a good coat of Sno Seal and heat it up in front of a hair dryer to let the paste soak in. Works perfectly. Did the same with the smaller version I picked up a while back.
Lexol would do, too.
I personally wouldn't want to put any kind of hard finish or sealer on the leather, but that's just me.
