I picked up 5 lbs of this stuff in powder form, I'm trying to make a batch of linen micarta today, blue/black/tan. it should look sweet if it turns out!
did I ever feel weird in the fabric store! made my gf carry everything lol
tried to act as if she was dragging me in there against my will hahahahahaha

anyway, does anyone know much about the plastic resin? I'm guessing I should be wearing a respirator when I start to shape it, if not I will anyway, I hate when I can't get the crap out of my nose! hahaha

the question I have is for the lubrication of the plates I'm using to press it all together, would a layer of wax paper work? instead of greasing it all up?
this resin is just mixed with water, so I'm guessing that it would never make it thru the wax paper....

also, is this the same stuff that I have seen guys stabilizing wood with?

Thanks, Steve.

Give it a try...but the stuff you have is for gluing up wood boat joints and frames. It dies to a brown color usually. It does not flex much, and I don't know how well it will penetrate the fiber of the cloth.I would suggest you make a small test piece from any old scrap shirt cloth to see how it works, first. As for the mold release, place a piece of heavy plastic sheet on the press plate, stack up your laminates, and place another sheet on the top.Press, and when dry cut it up and grind away. You can get a roll at the hardware store for a couple of bucks. If you cut it way bigger than your press plate, you can set your glue pot on the excess (built in drop cloth)and won't have glue dripped all over the work area and vise/press.

well there was no problems with it soaking into the fabric, it worked like a charm, and the glue has more of a greyish tint as it's setting up, which is great cuz I'm using a grey layer anyway...
my only problem is lack of clamps, I don't have near enough so I put all the weight plates I could put on top without it falling over... got about 120 lbs of crappy plastic weights in the middle and a C clamp on each corner.
I just hope that is enough. ;)

yup for sure, I got some HUGE clamps from my fathers shop and slapped those on, that should be enough.
I'll post pics tomorrow if it's all dried up

Great, I think everyone want to make that stuff now, I just got some Epoxy so I can try on Monday. :D

well, it's air hardening, so after about 24 hours I took off the clamps and took a look, it was still pretty wet inside, so I let it sit with the top plate off for about 8 hours or so, then removed the back one, right now it's hard as hell, but it kind of bowed in the middle.... I should still be able to use it no prob.

I took a small piece and left it in a glass of water for the day to see if it would weaken and nope, it held up fine.

over all I think I'll use this stuff for other applications, and keep looking for some 2 part epoxy.

I was actually going to cut in to it today and see how it looks with some shape, the colors still look great.

If I can get my usb cable working I'll post some pics (OJ and cables don't get along very well)

here's a strip roughly ground out.
I think I'll be using more layers of black next time :p

the outside edge isn't glued very well, but as I went closer to the center it got harder to grind out and seemed to hold together very well.
looks like I need to find a good press and some bulk epoxy! ;)

A cheaper alternative that works pretty well is Fiberglass Resin from Walmart.

does it need air to harden?
I'm going over to the mall in a few minutes I'll have to find some!
I would be using epoxy already but I can't find any in bulk, if I had to buy a million little packs of it, it would be far cheaper to buy some "real" micarta.
I'll try that fiberglass resin if I can find it tho

I went to walmart and found some polyester fiberglass epoxy with a separate tube of hardener, the problem is I only have about 10-12 minutes working time with it
hope I am quick enough!
that was the longest working time out of all the brands and types they had!

grrrrr..... I just noticed that this stuff has the hardener already mixed in the can.....in other words it's air hardening right??
the stuff I picked up is made by bondo, anyone know for sure? should I take this back and get a non-mixed version?
TIA Steve.

I would think so, if it is you should take it back and get non-mixed. I think that it would not harden well if air is restricted from the middle of you sandwich.

On another note, attempt #2 was successful. It actually came of the plates this time. Tried working with it, I could cut (hacksaw) it, drill it, grind it, sand it, countersink it, and tried to engrave it. Not bad and fun to work with but the fiberous crap that came off of it was hell.

does it need air to harden?

No, it's a two part resin. I'm not sure what you picked up, I've never seen a pre mixed resin but that would have to air harden. The one you want will have a tube of hardener packed in the cap of the can.

You can also get it at any auto supply place like Autozone or Home Depot. I'm not talking about body putty or filler. This will be labeled "Fiberglass Resin".
A quart can will last you a while. It does not give you much working time so have everything laid out and ready to put together.

I have the right stuff, apparently the hardener was missing from the can
I picked up a tube of hardener.
this stuff is polyester fiberglass resin, I think Ariel has used this too?
I have no idea how I'm going to get all the layers done in 10-12 minutes tho

I think you have bondo, body putty. It is a fiberglass reinforced resin. It is not the stuff you want. You want the clear resin for laminating fiberglass cloth on boats.Any marine supply will have it.Larger hardware centers often have it too.You mix it in two parts, and usually have from 20 min. to 1 hr. work time, depending on the type and mix ratios.
