Market Saturation?

It seems to me the pandemic solved some of the market saturation we were noticing earlier. Now most things that are popular or made in america are harder to find. Chinese stuff is obviously saturated still. Does this have anything to do with the more people joining the hobby? I anticipate production ramping up drastically this year to catch up. Thoughts?

Spyderco was expanding production in Golden maybe still does. Not sure about the others.

Where they moving or buying a new facility? That was one of the ones I was thinking about. They seem to be a little behind at the moment.

Maybe it has something to do with raw material access and then the following higher prices of those. I also think this will continue now with the crazyputin war in EU.

And yes I think more people had more time at home and some found knives as a new thing.

Yeah I'm hoping the US market will ramp up to meet the demand.

It's not that simple. The pandemic has had far-reaching and tremendous impact on all levels of supply chain. It has affected raw material pricing and supply. This has impacted manufacturing, as well as extending shipping lead times and a multitude of other logistical issues. There is no magic switch that will simply turn things on again.

It is going to take some time for things to stabilize again.

Many rich kids are still working from home with too much time online, at least partially and until Q3 - High Tech office work will never be the same again. Also, as we get closer to Nov., the cynic in me expects new shutdowns. Don’t think this will affect production as much as prices (and the # of flippers) continue to increase.

Ain’t nobody got no time for no shutdowns. I believe that another run of masks/shutdowns will be the nail in the coffin for the American people. The scamdemic is over.

You're right, the market is flooded with chinese imports. It's a sad day when you can get a chyna knife before you can get an American one, here in the USA.
Sad day indeed

One of the reasons i'm drawn to GEC knives. : )

More like I'm stuck at home looking at Bladeforums and saying neat! Then going to knife center and buying more knives with my stimulus check.

For sure. The price increases will be inevitable too which could also help availability.

Yup. I am doubtful of shutdowns though, people are over it. I definately expect price increases and you are right the flippers are getting out of hand. What can we do though? Nothing except don't buy them. It's in the makers hands, stop doing FCFS and do lottery. Then people who actually want the knife have a chance.

I agree.

I was all hopped up to buy a new EDC all this week but pretty much everything on my short list was out of stock and delayed by the manufacturer. Only taking (vague) pre-orders. Thankfully early this morning I was able to score the exact Para3 I was lusting for. Think things will get worst before they improve?

I don't know if the knife market is similar to the watch market. After the smartphone proliferation, experts said the watch, especially the mechanical watch, was going the way of the dinosaur. So imagine the experts' surprise when demand for watches over the last 10 years or so, especially mechanicals, skyrocketed. New demand was attributed to 1) social media spreading the word of luxury watches 2) China and India entering the buyer's market.

Anyway, just the other day the CEO of Patek Phillipe was asked about the incredible increasing demand for watches and he agreed it was happening but could not explain it.

So maybe knives are similar: social media spreads the word and many formerly 3rd world countries are in a buying mood. IDK
